Yes, Halo 2 had a very good set up in terms of menus and online play. Gears of War is a bit more complex to join friends, yet still possible.
First what we want to do is establish a "friend request" to one another. This is done by either me or you going into the 360 menu (Pressing the silver x while playing GoW) and once signed in to Xbox Live, pressing the friends button. Once that is up click "add friend" and spell out "Ripper714". (I would do this, however, I do not know your gamertag.)
Second, I or you go create a co-op game, or straight multiplayer match. Once this is done, the host invites the other player to the match. Simple!
