The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

In regards to your dropship helmets, can I ask for details on Spunkmeyer's? I see that it's missing some pieces; there is a pretty good 3d model available that could be used to restore that, if so desired [ Tronchavigas models ]

Is the Smartgun Screen Used also?

Yes. All three are from the same auction, actually. I'll cheat and just link to their pages:

I've read many conversations online about restoration vs conservation, and don't feel qualified to make any changes to them. So for now, I'm going with conservation / preservation, storing them in displays constructed by people with experience building cases for objects that need climate control / etc. Once this build is all done I'll try to find someone who's an expert and ask for their advice.

Ha! Awesome!
Yeah, understood re restoration vs conservation; I can see pros & cons for both (esp given the value of these items).

Well, I think you've definitely hit on the most appropriate way to display these pieces :D 8) 8)

As an aside, would you be up for some close-up photos on some of the prop details (& maybe providing the odd measurement, too)?

Definitely, happy to take photos / measure anything on these for you. But I have packed them away right now, until they're ready to be moved into the corridor, and I'd like to avoid unpacking / repacking if possible. So it'd be preferable to wait until they're installed before doing it.

With the big pieces in, we were ready to try out the smoke & alarm system.

Here's a video showing it in motion.
https://imgur.com/a/yM5d9c9

After that, finishing touches on the wall consoles, with the upholstery and cabling. Everything still unweathered. Maybe this is what the Nostromo's consoles looked like in 2101.

Here's one showing the video screen.

More cabling on the walls & ceilings. Door trims, including the faux door that separates the vestibule. Here's a photo from in front of the entry airlock door.

And another one from the middle of the corridor, looking back at the entry airlock.

As I mentioned earlier, other than the alarms the lighting here is mostly from the warehouse lights spilling in. But next, we'll finally start turning on some of the corridor's lights.

The Bridge was almost fully assembled at this point, with its lighting installed. Still needs weathering, but already looking great.

The vestible consoles were ready for weathering as well. It's pretty much impossible to stand in front of these and not start flicking switches & pressing buttons.

Vestibule lighting was all hooked up, including the display case interiors.

VestibuleConsolesLit1.jpg

All the lights are RGB LEDs, so we can tune their color as well as their intensity (and dynamically, when the destruct sequence has been initiated). As mentioned previously, this flexibility would be critical after installation, because the light leaking in through the edges of the corridor in the warehouse prevented us from doing final lighting beforehand.

And here's an updated shot of the alarm sequence with more of the corridor in place, including the wall consoles and their upholstery.

Oh yeah, I forgot to point those out!

That photo actually does a pretty good job of showing how they feel in person. The other photos I tried to take of the starfield directly all looked terrible because the camera picked up too much / little of the light, and highlighted reflections on the window glass that you don't really notice with your eyes.

Also, the opposite wall of the bridge (behind the camera in this pic) wasn't there, because it doesn't hang on the frame like everything else, it gets installed directly over a real wall. So in the warehouse the Bridge has much more light in it than intended. After installation, I'll try and take a video - hopefully that'll capture the starfield realistically, and show the parallax between the stars and the window.

Excellent, thank you! Certainly was thinking of this sort of request being a very occasional thing, and yes, post construction, of course :)

Bridge floor and details in. Since the undergrate lighting is RGB controllable, we're not going to worry about finetuning it until after installation. But here it is doing the kind of lighting that'll be active when the ESD is counting down.

Another shot at the bridge window, but the reflection of the undergrate lighting behind me was more visible than it was in person. But this was the best photo I took of the flight console detail at the time, with what felt like the appropriate videos running on it.

The finished space bowl from the outside, mounted over the bridge's metal window frame, with all the optic fibres under the cover that lead to the individual sparkling lights in the starfield. This will all get jammed into a very tight space in the installation.

Back in the corridor, the Airlock door was basically done, and ready for weathering. Although after this, when we did start weathering, we tried it on these white doors, and didn't really like it, eventually opting to keep them less weathered than the rest of the corridor. In the ceiling you can see the acid scarred hole, and its matching counterpart down below in the floor.

Love the Jones photo [well, I love it all, but that's a very nice touch] ... *IF* you want to get really down in the weeds, check outthis monster Propsumit forum thread re the toys that decorate the crew stations and other parts of the ship.

That thread is fantastic, thanks a ton for linking it. I definitely want to collect some of those, and/or build some replicas.

Another wall console largely done. Lots of dials and sliders to play with. Cables all getting attached and run up into the walls & ceiling.
Attachment:
WallConsoleCabling.jpg
WallConsoleCabling.jpg [ 289.55 KiB | Viewed 158039 times ]

The cables are really important in the low-lighting, because they create the organic shapes and metallic gleams that catch the eye.

More of the smaller details in there now, like the small panels above the doors, and more importantly the floor panels. Still no semiotic standards yet. The lighting in both of these is just from light falling through from the warehouse, so still not representative of the final. But they give a sense of what it's going to be like in low-light.

Lots of greebles and details to weather. Some of these are pieces we built (like the 4 door details to the left), and some of it is stuff we found (most of the right half).

A test of an embedded screen underneath the floor palletes. This was mostly focused on making sure we could find a material surrounding and encasing the screen such that only the image was visible, allowing the illusion of depth to work.
Attachment:
MonitorTest.jpg
MonitorTest.jpg [ 365.39 KiB | Viewed 157738 times ]

I also took another short video of the alarm state.
https://imgur.com/a/e2UMBFB

There's plenty more weathering to do, but at this point the building was ready for the corridor to move into it. So next up, we start dismantling everything and moving it, piece by piece, into its final resting place.

The installation volume, ready to receive the corridor. We sprayed everything black so that any glimpse of the real world through the corridor ceiling/walls would be additive, not distracting. The floor is lower than the floor at each end so that there's space for the floor pallets and airspace underneath.
Attachment:
InstallationEmptyCorridor.jpg
InstallationEmptyCorridor.jpg [ 310.02 KiB | Viewed 157632 times ]

The Bridge window and frame went in first, since they're the largest objects, buried deepest. Lower left you can see the fibre optic cables that lead to the individual stars in the starfield.
Attachment:
InstallationBridge.jpg
InstallationBridge.jpg [ 424.9 KiB | Viewed 157632 times ]

With the big Bridge pieces in, we could then install the frame throughout the corridor.

The bulkhead in front of the Vestibule also went in at this time, as well as the four door frames.
Attachment:

It's great to finally start to see it in an enclosed space, instead of the open warehouse. It already feels oppressive and claustrophobic.
