The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Not to take away from your outstanding work. But I saw this and got excited, but then realised the cocking handle is on the top, I guess it would make a good gangster gun :)

cheers guys it looks pretty rough at the moment but will polish up fine,i didnt want to just sling up finished pics as nobody learns anything ,just to give an idea of the work involved in making this sort of thing and if anyone else wants to have a go. Question does the safety on a real thompson lock the trigger or does it do something internal,it would be fairly simple to add a trigger lock on the safety switch but i dont know if this is the correct way for it to work, ideas/conformation anyone? Rob

The safety should stop the trigger from being pulled.

spent the past few days turning these out , I had to cheat on the auto/safety selectors they aren't steel got no way to turn them and didnt want to farm them out so i used an idea from another builder on matsuo's site called demetrius who used his drill as a lathe the two selectors are turned from 10mm aluminium in a standard drill chuck using various grades of file ,it takes a while and will clog the files but it works :D the other bits ,mag release and pivot plate are all steel cheers ,Rob

This is absolutely stunning work! I love the idea of using the bolts on the selector switches. I wouldn't even think about trying anything on this scale.

No mate, saw a couple of thompson replicas but would have been hard to get back in the country, plus they were the wrong model anyway!!
Holiday was good though!

here she is so far :D , bolt and carrier is made and fitted with full range of movement just got to sort out return spring for it ,slung the rest on to see what it looks like none of it is filled or fully finished yet, just a quick blow over to keep the rust gremlins at bay, with all the heat and welding it starts to rust almost as you are lookin at it , needs a lot of finishing work to bring it up to standards also need the mag next to line up the rest of the internals, it seems to be the way this build goes ,cant finish one bit untill i build the next and the one after to tie them all together, but its getting there, all the best , Rob

At the moment it could be any colour ,gloss black is what i got its on there purely to keep the rust at bay,its nowhere near its finished look at the moment ,i am aiming for the all black matsuo rifle look when its finished ,i intend to strip the whole thing back when i have everything made, fill it skim it and paint it properly, there is no point in doing it properly at the moment as i am altering/changing parts as i go along, the upper receiver still has a lot of work to be done on it but i dont want the rust to get a foot hold ,for some reason arc welding seems to rust/oxidise almost as soon as its cold, trust me it will look the part when its finished nick  all the best mate ,Rob

Why not use some gun oil / light machine oil and then spray degreaser when the time comes to finish it up? Seems like an easier proposal than paint and then thinner.
