The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I have only a few things left to get for my USCM costume now, a Seiko Pulsemeter being one of them. I had bid on one of these on Ebay about 10 minutes after it was first listed as the seller had sent me a message to tell me he was putting it on there.

No other bids for a week. I actually upped my max bid twice as it finished at 2:45 in the morning and I didn't think I would be there, so I upped it just in case.

Anway, I got a callout for work last night and got home at about 2 so I decided to wait up. Still no other bids with 15 mins to go. 10 seconds nothing. 4 seconds. OUTBID.

Tried to raise my bid but not enough time. I was gutted.

Not angry just gutted, that's the way it goes I guess. For a naive minute I really thought I was going to bag one for a bargain of $30. Oh well.

Darren

just changed my ebay ID to alfriendlyskies, someone already has friendlyskies so I added the AL on the front.

Hopefully people will recognise me now. Not that I expect anyone to not bid on something just because I have but feel free not to. :D

Very interesting!

I almost outbid you Darren... but my max was only like $81.00 so it didn't go through because Mr. Goth had already put in his $102.50+ bid. Oh well.

I would have bid more, but it didn't include the original electrodes that I need for my Hudson by-pass kit. ;)

I watched that one too...I had watched it all the way up to the end and saw the guy snipe it...I had just won a flak vest, so I didnt need to spend anymore...
Darren...you should always open up two or three windows so you can watch and refresh at the same time. Then have one page that has your max set. Leave it on the confirm page....that way if you see someone sniping you, you can usually hit the confirm button and snipe it from under him.

Im not promoting sniping, but Ebays a cut throat game;)
I know alot of peoples names on here, and wont try to outbid my fellow Marines....but I have to admit, Im glad you changed your name, because I didnt know that "Kemp" guy was you;)

Sound advice Derek. Silly thing is I probably would have paid a bit more for it but felt my max bid at the time was good enough as there had been no other activity on the item all week. My fault really.

There will be more though so not to worry.

I kept getting sniped on a gas mask and finally got one for less than my first bid on a previous item. Keep looking.

I was going to bid on that auction but then I recognized Darren's name.

It has yet to happen, but personally, I'm not adverse to bidding on an auction that someone else I know has bid on. I wouldn't snipe that auction, but I'd feel morally okay bidding on it. Just not sniping it. Still, I had a feeling that someone else was going to snipe this auction.

My advice to anybody that bids on ebay ~

* Wait till the last 5 seconds and bid your absolute maximum amount that you're willing to pay. Do not bid before that. If you don't win it, then it just wasn't meant to be.

* As Derek said, keep several pages open with various bid amounts ready for bid confirmation and keep refreshing a single page with the auction listing, down to the last 10 seconds. I typically always bid that way.

* Another thing to keep in mind: Even if I bid an extremely high amount on an auction in the last 5 seconds, if that amount is not more than the max bid that someone placed 6 days prior, I simply won't win it. It's not about who bids the fastest or last in an auction. The winning bid is ALWAYS the bidder who is willing to bid the most within the allotted time. I find that I get a lot less aggravated about bidding on auctions if I come up with the absolute maximum price I'd be willing to pay for an item. Not a single cent more, and bid that. That way if I lose the auction I think to myself that that is fine as I just wasn't prepared to pay any more than what I bid.

* Also, if I lose an auction, it may appear that the other bidder only paid 10 cents more than me, but in truth, it comes down to what the minimum bid increments for the auction is. For example, the other bidder may have actually bid a max of $100 more than my max of $172, but the winning amount by the opposing bidder only shows up as $172.10.

* If I win it but the auction amount gets pushed all the way to my max, I shouldn't get upset about it as I already mentally prepared myself for that possibility. Sure I'd rather pay less, who wouldn't? But if you can accept certain self imposed rules to live by on Ebay, it's a lot less frustrating when dealing with other bidders.

I concur with Alex.

Sometimes, it's not meant to be.

I got my Pulsemeter for 50-60 last year.

It was dead, but I took the risk of it just being the
battery. Luckily that was it. They are not easy to work
with once they're open.

Patience, Darren. They seem to come up frequently.
