The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

With all the happenings over HD DVDs brutal attack in the past 48 hours..what do you all think? Blu Ray has finally won the format war..and I dont know what to think..especially since I just got an HD DVD player for Christmas...
Major companies and websites are now talking that HD DVD will die a fast death..so sad as I supported HD DVD over Blu Ray.

Ive linked some articles and sites...there are several links on the
third and fourth..I suggest you read them before you buy..

BTW..Fox is now Blu Ray exclusive, so Aliens will be available only in Blu Ray...

It funny- in the 70s it was all about VHS vs Beta. Beta was regarded as the better format (my parents had friends that owned a Beta player).

Beta lost- I can only guess because it was more expensive, and VHS was able to churn out titles faster than its counterpart.

Heh! Now VHS is a thing of the past. Wonder how long it will take dvd to follow.

Guess I'll have to get a Blu Ray eventually... and update my library... again. :(

Reminds me of the scene in Men In Black where Kay shows Jay alien technology that will replace cds, and he comments that he will have to buy the White album again.

*edited grammar as I'm a bit anal about it

I strive to be behind technology just for this reason.
As long as the Blu Ray players will play regular DVD's I'm fine.
They will play them....right? :?:

But also with this technology, you think someone will find out how to hack the Blu-Ray players to play both formats?

--EDIT--
OK, I read the articles and got my answers. :)

I was hoping it wasn't going to be another "Beta" event for Sony. :)

Now if only the cost of the players would drop...

It annoys me that Movies like the Die Hard series are being released with HD only "specials" like behind the scenes and director's commentary, while the DVD versions of those same movies (recently re-released) lack them.

You said it, Spat!

This was the best news I'd heard for ages. BD is a better format (bigger capacity), and with it being part of the PS3 it's great news for me (I have a PS3 and a few BD films).

Plus, as a bonus, HD DVD is supported by Microsoft (who I hate with a passion), so it's even better.

As a PS3 owner, I have to agree that it is a phenomenal BD player. Even though Sony has done some not so nice things recently (DRM), they do kinda deserve to finally have a dominant format. They lost out on Betamax, Minidisk and UMD.

Unfortunately, the only thing that Blu-ray has over HD-DVD technologically is the higher capacity. HD-DVD is actually a more mature format. It has features that are just now starting to be implemented in Blu-ray.

For those thinking about getting into Blu-ray, the PS3 is the only option right now that has the ability to be upgraded to future Blu-ray profiles. Profile 1.1 is coming and the majority of current Blu-ray players are not able to be upgraded to play 1.1 disks.

The irony is significant as this format war somewhat mirrors the Beta vs. VHS war. Beta was a better format but the tapes could not hold more than 2 hours. VHS could and this was the basis for why it became the dominant format.

At this point it seems that Blu-ray is going to be the dominant format.

Now for god's sake, release Aliens on Blu-ray Fox!!!!!

It`s truely annoying that one looks to win & then POW Blu ray takes the lead.
Methinks some dodgy dealings have been done to achieve this.

As said here already by others. The Beta vs VHS all over again & we all know Beta was better.

im really hoping for the format wars to end. i dont own a PS3 at home and as of now am not really planning on it. id hate to throw down the couple hundred dollars on a player that would eventually become obsolete even if it is superior (BETA anyone?)

either way, it is good news that theyre putting it together in some sort of better format and arent pulling a Lucas on it.

Teckno Viking is right its all a bunch of back alley treaties and payoffs under the table :x . I have always been a non conformist and can happily say that I will hold out as long as possible (yrs.) till I am forced to upgrade. I have already stock piled some dvd players and I am happy with my "S Video" appearance. JUST MY TWO CENTS
