The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Dragon*Con (Atlanta, GA) is a good few months away, so plenty of time to save up! How many UKCM can we get across there?

The con dates are 29th August 2008 – 1st September 2008 but I am planning on arriving in Atlanta on the 28th and leaving on the 2nd, necessitating 5 nights in a hotel.

So, the Ready line …

I should be there

i'm 85% sure i'm going

could we take PR's over and bring them back?
Or will it be a case of just armor?

Just a quick explanation on how 'weapons' carriage should work if we go as a group or by ourselves:

Arrive at airport, declare PRs as sporting goods and request they be inspected by the police.

Have them inspected by the police and explain their usage. You will then give a statement, which you sign, as proof of inspection. IT IS VITALLY IMPORTANT YOU KEEP THIS!

Take to the USA and have a laugh (assuming your guncase doesn't get trashed in transit like mine)

Return to the UK, including your inspection chit in the case showing that you are not *importing* your PR, but returning with a PR you left with, thus meaning you don't get owned by the VCR.

While some people would say "best to err on the side of caution", if they took the PR off of you and destroyed it or whatever else, they would be breaking the law and you would be liable for a chunk of compensation. At the very least expect some minor inconvenience, but it's worth it just to avoid future hassle and to get your pieces Stateside and back :)

Also, baggage allowances to the USA are very generous - 36KG per bag both ways, and you get two cases. Hand luggage is one bag going out and one bag and laptop case coming back. You get a third checked case up to 36KG for sporting goods, which PRs qualify as, so gun cases would be fine to take Stateside.

£280 would be a fantastic rate to get for going to Atlanta. I got lucky with my £330 rate last year, but fingers crossed that we can keep costs down :3

Worry not, your liaison officer has your back!

True, but the Hyatt will be booked to buggery by the time I have any spare cash. Even my credit cards are empty right now.

TE armour comes before any other large expenditure at the moment anyhoo!

General advice to all: You only need to use a card to SECURE the room (no charge is made, provided you cancel the room before 3pm EST on the day before planned arrival).

The Marriott and Hilton are D-Con hotels as well guys- all with the same convention rate. I stayed in the Hilton last year and truly enjoyed it (despite the joke I made in the USCM D-Con thread... it doesn't suck.)

Yup, we know. Paul, Simon and I are all staying in the Hyatt only because we're staying in the same room. And I only booked that room in the Hyatt because our D*Con guide was already booked in there. ;)

I really need to do DragonCon next year, if I don't Spat will do unspeakable things to me.

I'm in!

Now who wants to share a room with me, considering I snore like an over-revved APC?!

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

And for the most part, remember that you can get food for cheap if you're smart and stick to the food court. AND, you can bring your own drinks to the bar, so that can save you a bit of cash as well. Chip in and buy a bottle of something, mix up your own drinks in the room, and bring down a cooler, and some cups. So long as you order a drink from the waitress once in a while, no one really cares. At the Hyatt bar anyway. Other bars are a different story.
