The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

OK, am super busy but I need to get this off my chest before Dcon. One of the biggest piss offs I have is people NOT with shaved faces while in the Colonial Marine gear. I f'ing cringe. As a retired Canadian military member with combined 27 years full time & reserve service, inside I want to walk up to those people and "rip a strip off" or "have them at the chow" for not shaving. I understand it's the weekend, and we are having fun BUT for you go ahead and spend hundreds, hell THOUSANDS of dollars on kick ass BDU's, armour, M41A's, etc, etc, etc....WHY can't you spend 5 minutes at the sink and shave? We have loads of active and previous serving military vets from all branches & multiple countries and WE should be the ones TELLING our new members to shave. A small thing to look more professional. Just ask yourself, "What would Sgt Apone say if he caught me unshaven?".

Simple. Sweet. To the point.

THANK YOU! - I didn't want to be the one to say it... I get enough flak around here already!

Your facial hair will grow back. I had to shave twice a day in bootcamp because I was 28 years old and I had a 5 o'clock shadow at 9am. If I can shave twice a day for 3 months, you can shave once or twice this weekend.

Absolutely agree. You'll notice that the military boys will agree and the civvies will counterindicate, however. ;)

Au contraire...

With all due respect, if you took that approach with me you'd get told exactly where to stuff it.

With several years of military experience myself, I do understand your reasoning and I agree that it looks both moe professional and, in particular, more Screen Accurate.

But as a former beardy biker type with 3 foot of hair, I'd need a damn good reason to even cut either!! I have since found that damn good reason, but there will be plenty of others who still choose to have long hair, scruffy beards and so on. TecknoViking just wouldn't be TecknoViking without the Viking beard, for example.

I'd also have NO hesitation in walking right away from the whole group if it really caused that much of a fuss.

This is neither military service nor re-enactment - it's a bunch of people dressing up in fictional costumes for fun. Thus it's peoples' personal choice as to their own appearance. No-one ever signed up to any rules, that I'm aware of, so it really is up to them whether they take that step or not and no-one here has either the authority or the right to make them.

All anyone can do is offer 'suggestions for costume improvement'.

No one is going to order you to get a regulation haircut. Or seperate you from the Marine Corps for being a fat-body. (at least I sure as heck hope not!)

We're just asking: Please shave.

Hhmmn. It's a hard argument to pull off unless you treat hair the same way. I mean what's preferable, unmilitary length hair/hair colour/hairstyle and clean shaven or a crew cut with a goatee?

I'd look more USCM with short hair and a goatee than with long hair and shaved. Just looking at it logically.

The whole argument loses weight anyway when you're marching down the street next to a man wearing a black lycra and rubber Alien suit.

For the purpose of a con, you can be wearing a helmet or cover, or hat the entire time and hide your long lucious hair.

Long hair in the Marines? For some reasons, there are regulations laxed on certain Marines. Recon Marines in my unit get a pass on thier long hair because they "are training" so hard apparently. There was also someone in my unit that had a full beard. His civilian job was a LEO and he was on an undercover assignment. He had a department letter from the LE agency, which the USMC accepted to exempt him from regulations. Extremely rare, but it does actually happen.

We have a saying in our reenacting group: "Be the standard, not the exception." Even in reenacting people want to have a captured weapon. or a mix-match of gear with some story as an excuse.

If I've not got my helmet on, I usually have a duty rag/doo rag (whatever you wanna call it) on.. (Un)fortunately, I can't grow much in the way of facial hair, so it generally stays gone.

Verily the TECKNO VIKING has done his time Clean Shaven and regulation haircuts and tis now the time for Heavy Weapons Special Ops for me and bearding :p

The Marines in ALIENS are lets face it are a rough bunch, they are NOT the perfect Marines. With that the USCM/UACM/UKCM etc are not the Perfect bunch of Marines HOWEVER personalities like those characters in the film are Most assuredly there. Which is what makes us more screen accurate. You want to be Perfect do Guard duty/Drill for 8hrs solid then you`ll know how "GREAT" that is :p Cold water shaving out in the field is NOT the greatest :p

As Woody said I would NOT have been dubbed the "TECKNO VIKING" by my peers back in `07 if not for my beard.

Plus since 2001 we have seen Many Nations now allow various stages of facial hair in due to location in Muslim regions going from stubble to goaties to FULL on BIKER BEARDS that ODIN himself would be proud of.

I`m reminded of an old quote "pretty is as pretty does" (Cobra Commander on seeing the Crimson Guards if I`m not mistaken) and we my friends are NOT pretty (with slight exceptions that you can fight amongst yourselves for that) BUT we DO have what is needed where and When it counts.

1/ We raise money for charity,
2/ We help each other out,
3/ We have a strong family,
4/ We do this for the love of the film.

Also you see Apone has stubble and he`s a REAL Vet ;) :p

Being in the Marine Corps, I can tell you that the "charactors" in the movie aren't just "charactors" for the story... They are infact, stereotypical Marine personalities.

If I was spending the entire con as a Marine, I'd consider shaving. Being that I plan to costume as Jensen from The Losers.

It's kinda hard to regrow my goatee overnight.

I tried, almost sharted.

We agree. In fact we have 2 UKCM members here right now with facial hair. We've just held them down and shaved every hair on their body. Scapeys testicals were a particular nightmare.

*characters.

I personally feel that when on duty, Marines need to be as close to perfect in all aspects of their demeanour. Chins should be nice and shiny smooth, and any messages posted for public consumption must be perfectly spelled. It's only professional, after all.

If you say so mate but Hudson has that growth under his bottom lip and I known a few NCO`s who`d tear him a new one "four more weeks" or NOT!!
Thing is the costuming for some is what once, twice, three times a year (some more I know) and a lot to ask them to change themselves just for those one day-four day events.

Part timers serving can get away with so much now depending on how loose they have it.

Scapey WAAAAY to go mate with Jensen (the rest of the team being done by others?) :D Me wanna See PHOTOS and IF at all Possible do the Pistol finger pose with two guys as security :D

I don't shave for work, due to a lack of respect between all parties. My feeling is why should I bother if they don't give a flying f**k about me?

I shave for working at the llama park, as they asked me to be clean shaven when on duty there, due to my heavily scarred face (some scald scars being invisible, but stopping hair growth) making any attempt at a beard/moustache look a patchy mess. :)

I can only use an electric shaver due to the scars and very sensitive skin, not liking 99.99% of soaps, cleansers, etc.

I've shaved today (including my armpits 8)), but won't be bringing my shaver with me, due to luggage/lifting weight considerations, so I might have a bit of a five o'clock shadow come Saturday Parade time. I hope I can be excused? :P

Hudson had his "soul patch." Sarge looked him square in the eye and "didn't" tell him he had to shave. What would Apone say? Absolutely nothing.

Did "all" of the Marines have high and tight haircuts? Hardly. Hudson and Hicks are the worst offenders with nice, prettyboy "short" haircuts, but certainly nowhere near military short.

It's just a movie.
