interesting stuff but I still think our idea of how many planets have life out there is incredibly optimistic. They think there should be 1000s in our galaxy alone. I think we will be extremely fortunate if there is one other planet with advanced life in the observable bubble that we can see in our universe - about 13 billion light years in every direction.

I recently saw another interview that included some shots of that same guy talking of the same types of civilizations; without explaining them. It all makes sense now.

But surely a planet must exist within the right distance of a star/sun for life to form?

There are just too many out there for it not to be the case.
Whether we can see them or they are advanced enough to see us is another matter.

I agree they must be out there but if you really look at their math they (life) should be everywhere which tells me we are really naive about how hard it is to form complex life.

They do have one good point though, the earth is really young compared to the rest of the exo planets out there. Billions of years younger actually. Even without lightspeed, a single advanced civilization could populate the entire galaxy in a few million years. That is their math, they believe that. According to them, there should be evidence of life in almost every direction we look.

They do not have a formula to explain why this isn't the case. They try to skip that part of the discussion really quick, kinda like how they have no idea what dark matter and energy is. Simply saying "well maybe they didn't want to explore" doesn't work because that is part of their equation. They factor that in and it still says life should be everywhere.

There are incredible differences (no real way to quantify how big, it's a huge difference) in what they predict should be true, and what they can observe. Completely without explanation, in both physics and exo biology.

Oh and "they" and 'them" just for reference are theoretical physics and exo scientists like the one posted above.

Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.

Michio Kaku!! I'm a huge of his! I've read Hyperspace and Einstein's Cosmos and I highly recommend both of those books to anyone interested in theorhetical physics, relativity, etc. :thumbsup:

It is not just distance but time that is the killer. Imagine a field of fireflies that could only light up once. That would be the cosmos. According to Al Gore, civilization will end in 20 years, but lets add a million years to be on the safe side. It is still a flashbulb in the darkness.
