The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

It's not just the Marines, though they set a great example. There have been some issues in the past caused by other events and people that made things a bit stricter.

I can recall being given crap by someone without any authority to do so back in 1994 for carrying along my sheathed sword when it was tied down and attached to me so well that it would take 10 minutes to get it out. That same sword, still tied down was auctioned off for charity on Sunday morning.

Things got better for costumers since that time, but at the July 2002 due to world events I guess things got clamped down again and the convention's weapons policy even made it into a newspaper :P

Please remember that the weapons policies are from the leadership of the committee, it's just security's job to enforce it. For what it's worth the security guys have always been really cool about stuff as long as it was handled safely (and occasionally asking to play with them too ;)).

From where I see it at cons, the people with weapons props tend to be the most responsible people I've encountered and set an excellent example to make life easier for using them in the future.

Yeah policy is set by people who THINK they know better, and enforced by people who usually actually DO.

I'm still fuming at the little non-staff troll who took one look at our Longshots last year at D*con and screamed bloody murder telling us they needed to be peace-tied even though we were around our own table. :x

The DCON thing was awful, usually that crap is committed by people who will never accomplish any other form of authority in their life (I refer to some people at Anime North in 2006, their actions as security made for a hot-not-to training video). Sometimes it's jealousy that drive people to be idiots considering how cool it is to be in the UACM ;) I recall seeing a couple SG1 people trailing us Saturday for no other apparent reason than to try to look cool :P

But as for Polaris the rules were set over the years, from my experience, from what one or two people did with stupidity and the rules adapted to attempt it to not happen again. For what it's worth Toronto Trek/Polaris has always been very reasonable when it came to weapons props and I'll give an example. In 1994 my sword was checked over and cleared by security and a staff member took objection and tried to get on my case about it, one of the security members saw that happen and actually told the zealous staff member to back off.

Here's the video from my gun camera, unfortunately the quality isn't great because despite my previous successful test my software wouldn't handle the original high quality video. I had to convert it into lesser quality video but still cool none the less.

I put my website in the video (I've had trouble with content stealers before so I tag all my original content) but put a link to colonialmarines.ca in the youtube infobox, as well as thanks in the end credits. If there are any appropriate edits to youtube title or info stuff let me know. Also I'll try uploading the original higher quality files to a free large file size data host like rapidshare or megaupload.

Here's the FPS video (note that I filmed without the barrel in the way this time unlike the previous attempt)

Excellent vid there Snake Eyes. :)

Quality looks fine too. 8)

Loved all the flashes going off during the Xeno attack on you, making it look stroboscopic like the film in places. :D

As some of you might know, Kathleen spent most of Polaris manning the KAG table as a ship's captain.
Recently, I received the official KAG event report for Polaris 22, most of the report is Klingon related, except the "best moments from the con", here's the interesting part.

Quote:
Watching the guy who built the full-scale power loader from "Aliens" strap himself in and take a few steps, surrounded by at least six very nervous spotters.

Might not have been completed, but sure did leave an impression.

I dunno, it works well in my ongoing getting owned at cons theme. I had an entire gallery of photos form cons where I meet my demise: Vader, Xenomorphs, Orcs, Troopers, etc. It began from around 2000 when I was a member of the T Trek red shirt security team and had fun on the job and it just went from there :P

Actually I was refering to the way you two guys started acting when a five
year old boy walking by noticed that Dom was about to slit your throat!

All of the sudden you two were like...

"Oh hai!"
"It's OK! We're just playing see?" Image

(Dom hides the knife and starts massaging Sid's head)

"Nice Sid. Nice Sid."

Oh crap! Yeah

Hindsight being 20/20 that was a bit much to expose to a child even playing around, if we do something like that again definitely have to reconsider the surroundings.
