The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

but why is the "for sale" section called "Base PX"?

There I've said it  I will prepare to feel silly.

Have I missed something in the Alien Universe, or is it something from America that I've never heard of?

I'll go and hide behind something now...

Ahhh!

I have looked it up (now I know what to look for), and it seems it stands for post exchange (i.e. exchanging things at the place you have been posted to), and it's used in the US army, so even if I knew military stuff, I probably wouldn't have understood the meaning over here.

I feel better now :D

Thanks, guys.

Not always Army. I've been on an Air Force base here and it was called a PX.

UK equivalent is the NAAFI, or 'Navy Army Air Force Institute', which is usually a pub / club / shop / barbers / launderette all rolled into one.

Anyone fancy doing my ironing? I can PayPal funds immediately... ;P

Once maybe... Ahh, halcyon days!

These day's the "NAAFI" is generaly just a Spar shop. Where you can pay silly marked-up prices for jaffa cakes; rent a few DVD's; pick up a new Slyvette cloth or pay a £1.99 charge to use the cash machine.
It's usualy cheaper to get in the car and go to the local Tesco...

On smaller training camps what's left of the NAAFI is closing all over the place.

NAAFI don't tend to run clubs or laundry these days .

We've always got a bar in the Sergeants mess and it's always DIRT CHEAP! :D

I'd like to see one of these PX's, find out how they compare.

Over here, they're known as CanEx.... "Ex" meaning the same thing as the "X" in PX. Exchange.
