The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Yup- 100% GI Joe! I guess it was to help make it appeal to us young Canadians?

I wish I still had the toys to show what I was talking about. But I ran into some money problems and sold all of them in 2000. :(

EDIT- wee bit of info here:

Silly question but did the packaging still say "A Real American Hero"? And if so were you like "what the hell"

It did- but it was in French.

Kidding!

Honestly I can't remember. I used to watch the cartoon all the time back then- there were no bones about where GI Joe was from.

I never had a problem with it- I was 14... what the hell did I care?

Found a pic of a Canadian variant- the Slugger:

By the way- should I ever decide to put together a GI Joe uniform my favourite was Recondo.

Canadian GI Joe... keeping the border safe from US grannies trying to buy prescription drugs. With extreme force!

The pic they show of "Shaman" shows the Joe logo, but no "Real American Hero" under it.

Holy crap. Did they have a contest for who could fit the most stupid ideas into one movie?

I think it's going to be the most awesomest movie ever. I'm going right now to stand in line so I can be the first one to get a ticket and see it!

I'll be back in August '09. Later, losers!

You all know, that no matter how bad this film is, someone will want replicas of those costumes.

I'm just hedging my bets so I can chat up the Scarlett and Baroness at the next Con.

Much the same way that Pete dumped all his money on Doom Movie gear in the hopes that it would be worthwhile, someone will have these suits after the movie comes out.

Some GIJoe trivia for our resident Canadian SSgt:

There was a member of the GIJoe team born in Canada; Backstop.

http://www.yojoe.com/filecard/87/backstop.shtml

Now you know. And knowing is half the battle.

(I couldn't resist!!!)

BTW, it sure does look like the movie is going to suck. Aside from ignoring the soul of the toys/comics, whoever heard of a First Sergeant being some 25 year old punk?

They should have stuck with the first few Joes. Zap(I think), Grunt, Flash, Breaker, Stalker, Scarlett, Snake Eyes, Hawk, Clutch, and Steeler. Hawk, Clutch, & Steeler came with vehicles. I liked Stalker, Snake Eyes, Scarlet (hot red head and armed), And of course Clutch. The guy came with the best 4X4...

Agreed. Go first gen all the way. This is supposed to be the origin story. So why not start at the beginning?

You have to remember that this is a MOVIE guys. Seriously, would YOU go to see a live action movie about a bunch of technicolored uniform characters spouting pro-USA propaganda? It'd be like attending an NRA ralley. :)

They have to change things to work. Iron Man was "created" in VietNam, not Afghanistan. Nick Fury was a white Sergeant from WWII, not Sam Jackson (Hell, or David Hasslehoff for that matter. :D ).

You have to change things to make a movie "work." All the 1980s Transformers fans hated the film, but that didn't stop it from making a bazillion dollars. Yes, that's 'bazillion' with two "L"s. ;)

I'd say reserve judgement until it hits the theater. Who knows, you may actually like some things they do.

Finally!! Someone else knows the score!!

"Nick Fury and his Howling Commandos" of WWII-
Col. Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Same guy. White guy that didn't shave much...

I like Samuel Jackson, but he ain't Nick Fury...

Now, Kurt Russell would have been pretty darn cool as Fury!

AMEN, Hollis DZC!!!

I agree with everything you said.

It isn't Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury, its Samuel Jackson as himself.

Samuel Jackson is Nick Fury. He's the Ultimate version of Nick Fury as the character was based off of him.

Interesting geek note. GI Joe was originally going to be tied into Nick Fury and Shield back in the 80s

GI Joe was all pro USA. The comic even more fiercely than the cartoon. Now it's ashamed to be.

I know that GI Joe was all pro USA. I was just trying to see how they could make a film that way based on the current global marketing for such a film. A feature film makes money based on domestic ticket sales, foreign ticket sales, and finally DVD sales (plus additional marketing).

I know. We already had this discussion when I lambasted the video "Ultimate Avengers" a year or two ago. I haven't read comics in years, so I was a little suprised that a character I had grown up... with was suddenly african american. It would be like ordering a Whopper at Burger King and getting sushi. They're both food, just not what you'd expect. :D

No, I really have no problem with Sam Jackson as an actor OR playing the "Ultimates" Nick Fury.

I'm not the big GIJoe fan you all appear to be, so I'll probably see it in the theater and probably enjoy it as well. I guess (for the most part) I'm easy to please.

The problem is when Hollywood makes a movie from a comic / video game is that we the fans have our fav. era, i never really read Iron Man untill i started reading Ultimates, also comics every now and again rewrite the origins of the hero, they have to bring them uptodate a bit..look at Batman , we should have a 90 year old guy in a Batsuit.... but the writers keep updating him, would we go and see a Batman movie set in the 1930's.?
As to the GI.Joe movie i will wait until i see a trailer or something
