The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Wandering through Woolworths today I caught sight of a DVD with a familiar logo out of the corner of my eye. It was actually half-obscured so at first I thought it was a new release of AVP, or a twin pack, or something.

However upon picking it up, I was stunned to see:

Image

If there's ever been a more obvious rip-off/cash-in made, I haven't come across it.

This is not quite the same cover as I saw. In addition to the 'alien' and the 'hunter' it had bored-looking people pointing guns.

And it stars TVM perennial William Katt! Fried gold!

I didn't buy it by the way. I may be an idiot but I'm not stupid.

No figure shown on IMDB:

So either a secret or really low.

Poor William Katt...

Reduced to being in something like this.

Enough of AvH to convince you how bad, bad can be.

It has a rating of 1.3 out of 10 on IMDB, and that's with 1,122 votes. It's in the bottom 100 films

The biggest rip off I've ever seen is Carnosaur 2 - I found 52 things that were stolen from Aliens. I started making a list after finding 8 things in the first 5 minutes.

Even has a trailer posted.

Pretty sure this was a Sci-Fi original. It aired on sci-fi anyway. I think on a sunday, at like 2pm.

Prepare to be amazed... we saw another one today so we bought it.

Darren, that makes at least two branches of Woolworths who carry it - chances are more of them will.

The back of the box is brilliant - it says "The ultimate ALIEN vs PREDATOR!" and "From the special effects masters of Fantastic Four!"

A review will follow once we've watched it. Maybe.

Personally I can't wait to see the promised 'bloopers'!

Wow they still have Woolworths???

To be fair the movie Starship Troopers ripped off Aliens, but the book came out in '59, although the book and movie don't have much in common

Yes, but they're not as good as they used to be.

My local one used to be a great shop, where you could buy anything from a bag of sweets to a suitcase or even a reel of cotton.

Over the last few years it's got worse and worse, to now where most of the stuff it sells is movie licence toys and other such crap.

My recent trips to Australia were an eye-opener, as their Woolworth's are more like Wal-Mart stores in the US, mainly selling foodstuff, electrical goods and other sundries. :)

Indeed. I read SST- the movie was really nothing like it.

My comment was more of a tongue-in-cheek joke.

And Woolworths are a thing of the past here. I think the last time I was in one was over 20 years ago!

Well... we saw it. Um...

It's hard to be objective when you spent most of it with your mouth open in sheer confusion. I won't give away the plot (LOL) but here's a few observations:

• A lot of it gives the impression that it was filmed on one camera, and people's dialogue done sequentially. There's a lot of looking at each other and reacting to things which don't make sense. Also I'm convinced there was ad-libbing going on, which who knows, perhaps they encouraged it... but it didn't work. That said, there were one or two bits of the script I quite liked. They don't last long though.

• Most of the exteriors have a yellow filter on... except when it's night time, in which case they cleverly swap the filter to blue. I haven't seen such blatant day-for-night since Hammer closed down. Also it seems to take place mostly in one clearing in some woods. People say things like "we've got to get off this mountain!" So, er... get off the mountain?

• Watch out for the alien hunter's lasso, which at one point is a bungee cord.

• Contain your amazement as one of the characters brandishes a gun with an orange plug in the end. Seriously.

• It didn't help that there was a character called 'Mr Garrison' and every time anyone said his name I couldn't help but think of Cartman.

• The 'music' sounded like something from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

• The FX range from average to pathetic. The certificate is 18, which baffles me as every time anyone dies it seems to happen off-screen, while the other actors grimace a bit.

Incredibly there's even a twist ending which sets it up for a sequel! Oh, and you have to read the end credits because there are some (intentionally) funny comments in there.

In closing, if someone here had made it in their spare time I would have said 'nice try'. But to pretend it's a real film and sell it in shops... no way. Still, I'm glad I saw it and I don't have to see it again.

PS Darren, if you really want to see it we'll send you ours and save you the £2.97!

Hmmm, did you just watch AVP-R then :P

Sounds like a real shocker of a film though tbh.

If not maybe someone else will take it. Hey, we could pass it around the country until everyone has had a taste of its cheesy goodness.

I actually saw this on the shelf of a video store- right next to AvP...

For $23.99!!!

I really wanted to say something to the store clerk- that perhaps they should give the film a once over and re-think that figure, but I know they don't determine the prices.

I just feel sorry for the poor sucker who picks it up for that ridiculous amount!
