The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Thanks everyone! :D

Got some dvds to add to my collection:

Reservoir Dogs

Superman II

Full Metal Jacket

And Forrest Gump!

Also got a much wanted Philishave electric shaver.

As to anything I plan on buying as a present to myself...

I believe there is a double-bladed FX lightsaber at a local sci-fi comic store with my name on it. ;)

Now about how old I am:

For an apricot, I am ancient...

For a head of lettuce, even more so...

But for a mountain, I have not even begun in years. ;)

Thanks again guys! :D

Apparently Stanley Kubrick shot all his films in a 1.33:1 aspect ratio, and then blacked out the top and bottom literally to fit a theater screen. The 1.33:1 ratio is very close to the standard 4:3 aspect ratio of a non-widescreen television. I guess that dvd producers feel it is redundant to offer a widescreen version when the movie was filmed in a ratio that fits a standard television to begin with.

So none of Kubrick's films are available in widescreen format. :(

Happy Birthday Kev! :D

Sorry I'm a little late, but I've been a little hit or miss on the OT Forum lately.

Sounds like you got some nice stuff... but hey, that "Full Metal Jacket" DVD... is that fullscreen or widescreen? I just stopped off at my local Best Buy yesterday (last minute Mother's Day shopping ya know ;) ), and I almost picked it up for $9.99 -- but it was only the FULL screen version, and no WIDESCREEN or 16:9 Anamorphic versions were to be found. Is this title even available in widescreen?

Again, Happy Birthday man! ;)

Ahhh... another one of those!

<friendly hijack> :)

Remember the fiasco with the "Back to the Future" release on DVD with the widescreen vs. fullscreen versions? The widescreen actually showed less of the actual filmed footage because they did the exact same thing for the theatre release by blacking out the top and bottom to fit the screen. All of the hardcore fans realized quickly that they wanted the fullscreen version instead because you actually get to see more of the film than what was actually seen during its original theatrical release. (very cool in my opinion) :)

However, there was a little twist to that -- many of the shots that were special effects shots (like the flying Delorean shots) were only done in a widescreen matte, so you actually get cheated out of seeing the entire frame of those scenes in the fullscreen format.

Because so many insanely hardcore fans were mad about having to purchase both versions of the film to get the best of both worlds, Universal offered a special edition DVD set available by exchange only for those who wanted a fullscreen version of the film with widescreen special effects shots.

Unfortunately, I only have the fullscreen version because I missed the deadline on the exchange through Universal Studios.

</hijack over> ;)

Ok, umm... If I wanted to get the BTTF trilogy on dvd, which format would I be looking for? Widescreen or full?
