The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

well,for what it's worth.....
my airsoft -a-like armour arrived today in the post, and i couldn't resist trying it on.
it's basically a medium threat vest with some bits and bobs made to look like m3 battle armour.

on the whole, i was quite pleased with the look of it, but it does look a bit like retro armour ( as in a precursor to the m3 battle armour).

what do you guys think about a name change? as in a version called the m1?

the armour itself started life as what i'm told is called an m.t.v (medium threat vest). this is what i asked to be used as a base, mainly because it was what was the closest i could find at the time to the actual body plates similar to colonial marine armour.

next up the yoke was added and the shoulder straps along with the belt, and shoulder armour ( j-tac tried his best to keep as close to the original design as possible).

the sides also feature molle strips that will hold my pouches for airsoft (ammo and water). but the set isn't finished yet...

tomorrow i'll be trying to find and buy some plastic helmets to cut in half for the shoulder bells ( i think that's the correct word), and i might be ordering a abdominal pad from him to complete the upper armour parts.

hopefully in the not so far future i should be able to constuct the shin and knee armour to complete the set........

........i hope...........

rear armour shot. the vest itself is fully adjustable and will fit any size ( i'm a bit of a chunky monkey, so trust me...it'll fit any size  )

apologies for the "stuffed with pillows shot", i needed something to bulk the armour out for photo's......had fun trying to explain this to my wife when she got home.........

I contacted J-Tac, as I figured a cloth armour type might be funky for 'recon' type loadouts where stealth maybe more important than protection. I've pasted their reply:

"There was a plan to make some but after a good look at a Spatcave set it's not going to be possible to make in a cordura version at this time. It may be possible in the future but not yet. Sorry to disappoint."

Oh well. Maybe another time

i'll admit it isn't as film accurate as some of the other types on the market, but it's the best i can afford on my budget sadly...but i'm curious about the "accents and design". i assume you mean camo patterns, graffiti, badges and the like yes?

It's neither one thing nor the other, I think is the point, good sir.
The point about USCM M3 armour is it's a hard shell- making it look quite different to the normal 'tac gear' appearance.

To be more 'Colonial Marine' like, it would need more rigid 'shaping' to rather looking like a standard stab/flak vest- which is what it does.
Adding some plastic/rubber panels (like with motocross armour style) would definately make it look more sci-fi.

Some shoulder pads (Pauldrons I think) over the tops of the shoulder would help.
Further, the classic 'codpiece' needs looking into.

All that said- it looks eminently usable for airsoft or similar.

that's a good point deamon case,
at some point, i'd like to add the shoulder bells/paultroon thingies ( thinking of buying two plastic toy army helmets, and getting freaky with the dremel).
the armour itself is for use in airsoft as stated, and the abdominal armour is on order and should be with me by monday. but i do like the idea of inserting some plastic padding up the front to make it look a bit more like the m3 version ( i was going to call my version the m1,kinda like a precurser to the current issue).

now to look up some prices of viable plastic sheets....or maybe i should just take the neighbours wheelie bin hostage..

thanks for the advice :-D

anyhoo, after a long hard think, i've decided to scrap this project and bite the bullet as they say. i managed to sell all of my old gaming stuff, along with a few airsoft rifles to raise enough money to buy a proper set of armour (should be here next week). so all i'm going to do is use the straps from this one on the new set,and turn this one into a way land yutani merc outfit ( that way i can still use my sa80).

i guess all that's left to say is thanks for all your input and soory if i wasted anyones time or dashed anyones hopes.

peace out y'all

Waste time? Dash hopes? Come on, were all family here. We are not bound here by the 'if it's not screen accurate, it's not good enough" mentality. Any new way of building an outfit is going to at least be enjoyed by seeing how some one puts something together, screen accurate or not. Heck, I don't have armor, or know when I'll be able to put something together myself. The creativity of everyone here is my real inspiration, including yours.

There's no such thing as bad data- even a failed experiment is useful in leading you to the right result :)
And if we knew the way to get to the result we want, there would nothing to discuss or think about.

anyhow, been busy in the last few weeks. i ordered and bought a new set of armour from chef ( dont think i'm allowed to mention prices here, so i wont....dont wanna cause any bother),and despite a "small" accident when it got delivered, evrything is working out fine so far.
i might post a "how to assemble" thread when everythings finished, and painted up,and i might even include a post game report when i next go to play airsoft.

thanks again for your time

it's a thing of beauty...isn't it....
