The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

You'll need to get me very drunk first... and then get me to the Spattle!!
Ooh, there's a Spattle idea - Ripley from the final confrontation scene in Alien, before she dons the spacesuit!!

I'm reminded of ADC's sig banner - "Harry made me do it, honest!!"

Steve, I have most of the items required for that. Someone had issues with it though. So get in touch closer to D*Con if you want.

Perhaps I'll expand on what I said just a few posts ago:

After Aliens was released many original costumes were sold at the now legendary Bonhams auction in Hammersmith, London in August 1987.

The auction catalogue has several listings for Ripley's flight-suit (there are nearly always multiples of a costume made for various reasons; stunt work, spare, hero version, FX version etc.). In these listings Ripley's costume is described as both as a one-piece ("a one-piece flying suit") and as a two piece ("grey battle blouse and trousers"). I don't think the auction included every single costume from Aliens but that catalogue proves that there were at least two one-piece Ripley costumes, and one two-piece costume.

Harry

Getting back to Ripley's outfit for a moment, the auction listed her brown leather jacket as an American WWII style pilot's jacket, which looks to be an A-2 flight jacket. However, there are clearly what look to be an extra verticle pocket on the left breast above the front cargo pocket, and another pocket added to the upper left sleeve. They were a little hard to make out in older video and even DVD format, but in hi-definition they are very apparent.

As far as I know there have been no American versions of the A-2 issued like that, so I've just assumed those were modifications added to the jacket by the costuming department. I've also wondered if it might possibly have been a British variant of the A-2 design. Anyway, I really liked the look of it, the extra pockets make it more interesting than a standard issue A-2.

The jacket was made by Peter Botwright at Wested (http://www.wested.com check out the film credits), he was the leather manufacturer for Alien, Aliens and Alien 3.
In Alien he did the Nostromo leather jacket worn by one of the actors (with NOSTROMO yellow lettering on the back.
In Aliens he did Ripley's jacket, which was basically an A2 with added details... however it was not a modified A2, the jacket was made on purpose for the film, not alterating a real one. Peter also made the A2 jackets for Hannover Street so he already had experience in reproducing those.

This was confirmed to me by one of the costumiers, Peter of course confirmed too. I'm quite an expert on certain parts of Ripley's gear now.

My doubts were about her jumpsuit. If there are no info around I must suppose it was simply made-to-measure by the costumiers like the rest of her gear (jacket, shoes etc). Only the watch seems to have been simply purchased from a shop.

Do you know where pictures of Ripley's costume from the AW London could be found? I've tried hard to find good shots of her shoes but the only photos on the net are really low quality (too bad digital cameras were not existing back then). Surely people took more pictures of this stuff during that event!?!?

I too have tried to find decent pics of Ripleys outfit from AW, Harry has a couple on his site, but as you say, digital cameras just weren't around then......I always presumed that the costume was part of Gary Gillies or John Gormans' collection.....they had allsorts of stuff!

To reconnect to our previous topic...
here is the AW museum from Harry Harris website http://www.harryharris.com/awmus.htm

and this is the best shot we get of her shoes

Far as I know Wested don't make them anymore. G has more details, I believe they used to.

edit.
Just emailed em. We'll see if they can make em again.

Yes I believe Wested still makes them although they are not listed on their website anymore (probably because no one was ordering them anymore). The problem is that the last jacket I've seen made by Wested was NOT accurate AT ALL!
Check out this thread http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=65544

To have a screen accurate one you would probably have to send screengrabs from the film and point out that it's a modified A2 jacket. Very disappointing I know. You need to give some "directions" when ordering a screen accurate jacket. No matter if they have produced it for the film years ago, they won't have the patterns handy to remake one easy-peasy

I was told via email that they make them. Then, having drove across London, the owner said that they don't anymore. That was late 2008.

Maybe not as standard... I'm sure he has the patterns and/or could look at photos and remember how to make one.

I assume you offered him money, G?
Or would he not be interested in a private commission?

How about a run of them?

I didn't offer him 5 figures or anything like that lol. If I recall, at the time it was still on the website, priced about £200 ish?
He didn't seem all that interested generally ...

That sounds like a plan.. After christmas when funds have settled down a bit?

I remember Aliens magazine doing a aliens branded jacket in the A2 style. Could never afforded it back then. Now though.. Maybe if the time of year is right..:)

That was a Wested product too. They made it after Alien 3. A quilted version and a leather one much like Ripley's but full of patches from all the 3 movies. I'll see if I can find the advert I saved in a JPG somewhere

Who might be interested in purchasing one, or at least thinking of it, could send me their nicknames (or reply to this thread) so I know how many people I could say to Peter that are wanting to see the jacket back in production. This phonecall might be made in late January so there is time.

Can those who have attempted this outfit post some pics of progress made? My wife went to her first con last week and actually had some fun. She has a striking resemblance to Sigourney. I would like to do the definitive ripley, with the double weapon and bare arms. She probably wouldn't do it but I would like to build the Flamer anyway.

I have
the PR and parts for the FT.
Grenades
a wife who looks like ripley;)
Flares would be pretty easy.
The hair might be the biggest obstacle

Here is a pic but don't derail this thread with comments on the picture. I will add to my "fanboys" thread on the MFH.

Just wanted to say thanks for clearing that up. I always suspected it might have been fabricated especially for the film, just never had the facts of the matter confirmed before now. I'll update my Aliens data files accordingly. 8) :delta:

I've interviewed a few people in the costume business, especially from the UK, and I've now collected quite a high amount of info (especially on Alien trilogy and some other famous films) in the form of a private journal with some rare pictures too.
The friends that read it have repeatedly suggested me to publish it, I am still considering whether to do so... I'll keep you updated if I do, however it might take me a long time because it would involve asking permission to the people I've talked to, eliminate confidential information and most importantly, find some spare time (and I have not much of that  )

The missus found mine in a jewellers in Gran Canaria around '92. I'd seen a black one that I almost bought, she spotted the real McCoy. Before then, I'd admired a well-worn one on the arm of a regular visitor to where I worked, but he wasn't parting with it.
If it's any consolation, it's heavy, uncomfortable to wear, pulls at the hairs on your wrist, and despite an expensive service by Seiko themselves has never worked properly for long.

Sounds great, and I'm sure a lot of people would find that very interesting, if not especially useful. I certainly would! I've been compiling an Aliens data file of my own, which is mostly photo references and notes based on things observed from having watched the film countless times over the years. It's more of a scrapbook really, but I've managed to compile a useful amount of data which I intend to use as a guide for super-detailing a complete squad of SA 1:6 scale colonial marine figures I've been working on for the past several years. They are still very much a WIP at this stage, however. Obtaining head sculpts with accurate likenesses of key characters is the biggest obstacle at the moment, and that most definitely includes E. Ripley.

If you don't mind, I may ask you for some advice when I start working on her costume. I have both versions of her flight suit made by Hot Toys (one and two-piece), but I suppose both of them will need some fine tuning. I also have a DML A2 jacket that's a little too large, but with a bit of tailoring I think it can be modified to closely resemble the custom made jacket she wore in Aliens. Probably as close as I'll ever get, anyway.

Btw, I know just what you mean about not having much spare time. I also have so many things I want to do and projects I've already started, but simply have not had enough time to give them due to so many time constraints, primarily on account of having to make a living... ugghh. Anyway, if you ever do decide to look into publishing your journal, by all means LMK! :)

Of course you can ask me, if I can answer I'll be glad to help.
Also, if I do any kind of publishing you'll be the first to know

my Seiko watches became very comfortable as soon as I took away a few links from the wristband (I have a very thin wrist) adjusting the size to my wrist.
Also, I'm quite hairy but I didn't find these watches too pinchy, only rarely they have pulled a hair. However I've had other watches in the past that pulled a lot of hair from my wrist and I can understand how annoying it could become.

Whenver I look into a jewellery shop and I see these chunky horrible expensive watches costing several hundreds of pounds I laugh at them because my 80's quartz watch is far superior to any of them, both in look and price (I got mine for £200). Everyone who I talk to always ends up staring at my wrist... it's almost like having big boobs while talking to a guy
