The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Ok I've got most of the components for an enlisted version of Gorman's Service C uniform. The shirt is being altered and should be ready by Monday. Funnily enough- it is an RCMP short-sleeved duty shirt. The pockets are the correct shape (although they do have button closures). It also has epaulettes which are to be removed and a Mandarin style collar created out of the existing collar.

Pants are CF army dress trousers. And I picked up a CF army service cap as well.

But I've a wee bit of a dilema- where to put the rank?

Gorman's was on his shoulders (which was odd considering he had no epaulettes). Enlisted rank would be on the sleeve. So I'm thinking about putting one SSgt rank patch on the left sleeve under a US flag (in keeping with Apone's BDUs).

I'm also considering taking a couple of liberties- for instance having an engraved nametag instead of embroidered nametapes (yes I know the screenused ones weren't embroidered  ).

Thoughts?

Oh.. I'm sorry.. That's not the right color. You can't play with us anymore ;)

Now forgive me, but the real question is this the greens or the khaki top?

What your thinking for the positioning of rank is in line with current military dress.
Officers rank is on shoulders and enlisted on the sleeve, for dress uniforms.

The name tag vs' tape. I would tend to go with a engraved style over tape on a dress uniform. These are meant to look a little more professional then the BDU's . Name tapes are meant for something that can take a beating like the BDU'd where class c would take the kind of wear requiring that.

Michael- thanks man. Definitely going with the engraved nametag. I still have my old RCAC nametag- but after 20 some odd years it has yellowed with age. Paradestore sells USMC regulation tags (oh boy... another reason to place an order with them   ).

Derek- once I get the shirt back I'll take pics of the alterations.

In my defense, I was incredibly Jet-Lagged the whole time I was in the UK. And the Brits kept making me drink this strange brown liquid called, "Jack Daniels" all day and night. By the time that pic was taken, I was pretty sure that I was a Ballerina in the Moscow Circus.

I like. I didn't know till now that the cover is black. I need to see if I can find the cloth part of the hat. I have a cover in storage from my Coast Guard days.

I do like the ideal of the rank on the sleeve for inlisted.

I do believe the cover is actually dark green. The pictures of the screen used uniform showed it as dark green. It looks like a modified US Army dress cap (before the uniform change) that was modified slightly cosmetically, and then had a USMC enlisted man's (black) EGA put on the front.

I also agree with putting the rank chevrons on the sleeve instead of the top of the shoulder ala Gorman.

Yes the service cap is dark green. And I've seen those US army caps- it looks like that's what the screen used cap was (I would have grabbed one if they had my size). The army cap has gold buttons (for the chinstrap) and a hole in the center of the brim to place the EGA device- just like Gorman's.

The movie itself is pretty dimly lit in that scene- so the cap looks nearly black.

The Canadian Forces army cap and dress trousers are a 99% match to what is seen on screen.

(Not to sound too nitpicky  )... A USMC regulation shirt is ok to start with- but the pockets are incorrect; they are triangular shaped at the bottom. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police duty shirt I bought has the exact squared off looking pockets. Just waiting to see how the collar turns out.

Don't get me wrong though- Dom's v.1 and v.2 service C's absolutely ROCK! Which is why I've been inspired to do my own! :D

I was always under the impression the "hat" was simply an issued USMC green barracks cover. Looks just like the one I own.

Kev, all you have to do is get the green cloth portion and switch out the white on your dress cover and it's the same thing.

Is the USMC barracks cover green similar to the dark green of Canadian Forces and I suppose the screen used pants? I always thought the USMC cover was more of an OD green than dark NATO green.

If it is ... then I think we got something here that would be easier for a lot of us to find, and could be used on the dress uniform as well.

Just some random thoughts.

Ok here are the best screencaps I could make of Gorman's cover:

Image

Image

Image

Now I happen to own a USMC cap with the olive green cover (which I switched out the black chinstrap buttons for gold ones):

Image

First notice the position of the EGA device- it is high on the brim. The tip of the Eagle nearly is aligned with the edge of the brim itself.

Image

Now look at Gorman's- it is closer to the center of the cap than the USMC one.

Image

Now here is an Army enlisted service cap- notice the position of the cover device.

Image

Here is the USMC cap from the side (I'll admit mine is not the tightest example). Notice how the brim sticks out when the bottom edge is held parallel to the ground. Also notice the angle of the peak- it is relatively shallow.

Image

Again Gorman's has a much flatter looking brim at the front. And the peak has a much sharper angle nearly pointing downward to the floor (it is not even parallel to the floor in this pic).

Image

Image

And here are a couple of examples of the Army cover. Also notice the dark green colour in the second pic.

Here are a couple of pics of that Canadian Forces Army dress cap:

Image

Image

And just for giggles a British Army cap:

Image

I'm not trying to be an accuracy Nazi here.

Just trying to illustrate a point that it is either a US Army cap or something very similar. Really you can go with whichever cover you like- I prefer the CF cap over the USMC cover. Ultimately I'm going to grab a US Army cap when I find a decent one in my size.

Very nice pics Sarge, thanks!

I think for me personally ... going with the Canadian Forces cap and pants would be best as the shade of green would match. If only I could find them easily here in the US!

Royal Ulster Constabulary peaked cap :!:

Image

A damn good match in shape, colour and details.

Also possible that Gorman's trousers may have been the issued RUC trousers which were the same dark green colour ( a la British Army Barrack Dress trousers )

For the record, I went with a British forage cap.

Got the shirt back from the tailor's today!

I forgot to take a before picture- basically it looked like this:

Image

So the epaulettes were removed along with the top half of the collar to create a makeshift Mandarin collar:

Image

Image

I'm going to remove the collar button.

As for more of these, I found this one totally by chance in a thrift/second hand store. The only reason I'm calling it and RCMP shirt is that I saw them being advertised as that at one of my favourite surplus stores. They had more than a few as far as I remember.

Dom if you want one just PM me.

That Royal Ulster cap certainly is as close as it gets! I'd have to see it from the side to be convinced. Probably makes sense that the cap was British issue.

It's funny though- the gear is an odd blend of UK/US gear. They wear RAF Mk11 flying suits with US SPH4 flight helmets.

Don't forget the Garison belt! Plain version.

I'm still looking for a properly sized hat with a nice bill. The one I've got fits, but the bill is all dried and cracked. I have another one with a good bill, but it's way to small. All the ones on eBay are always to small.

And Kev, I'd go for movie accuracy all the way. I know the name tags look bad, but it's the future man! :)
