The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Has anyone thought about doing something like this? I've seen the UK guys make some, and I know the 501st does them for every con. But what about us? Harry mentioned not knowing who everyone is when you meet them in person, and he's right.

Since this is going to be the largest gathering of AL members, should we have someone make up some name tags of some sort?

Just a thought.

Well, I have my name in bright red in the middle of my chest

Image

Which I think helps.

Additionally, I'm planning on having my D*Con badge read "PFC Spectre"

I made a protoype last year...

I can get these made for $5 each with the appropriate US or UK logos. They would be plastified with an alligator clip; I just need to make a minimum run of 10.

I'd spring for that.

The UKCM have our own badges but I have to admit that like Doms they're very nice but not easy to read at any kind of distance.

The ones we wore for drops in the past were much more simple, and easier to read at a distance.

Image

Just an idea but I'd say keep it plain and simple.

I'm with Harry, if these are made to make your name easy to see then that's the primary functionality to consider.

Dom, yours is cool, but too busy. It would take longer to find the persons name, than it would to just ask them who they are.

Simple, like the ones Harry posted, is the way to go. Something that mentions the AL, the person's screen name, and real name or name they go by in real life. :)

This way we can spot fellow board members when they're out of armor, or in other costumes.

And if it's something that will attach to the lanyard, even better!

I would be up for one, whatever the group decides on.
And even though Dom hates me, I do like his. :)

So we are all going to have personal nametags in addition to the massive D-Con pass that will look like this-

Image

And that you have to wear anywhere you go at D-Con whether you are in costume or not.

Wonderful idea.

Yep- can't forget the parade ribbon.

I don't mean to come off overly sarcastic (but I figured Spat's a big boy and can take it)-

It's just that your D-Con pass will have all the info that these AL nametags would have. In big letters no less.

Don't get me wrong- if you guys want to go ahead more power to you. 8)

Good point Sarge, but does one have to wear that thing all the time?

Also, just out of interest my little yellow DragonCon card has my legal name on it - will I be able to change it to my 'real' (i.e. the one that everyone knows me by) name when I register?

The D*con badge? I think you don't have to wear it if you're in the costume contest (since it would detract from said costume).

Other than that... yeah. Security can be dang tight.

The D-Con staff can be total Nazis sometimes. If you go into any of the panels, art displays, dealers room etc they will want to see your pass.

Hanging around the hotel lobbys for pictures can be hit and miss.

The Hyatt is by far the worst- most of us gather in the Hyatt bar during the evening. The staff will check for your pass just by entering the Hyatt hotel- this is to try and keep the massive number of on lookers down to the fire regulations max capacity.

They can be jerks about this. Some people were turned away from certain entrances even if they had Hyatt room keys! They were forced to walk around the building to the main entrance.

Let's just say unless you are going out to dinner, you shouldn't stroll around the convention without it.

How about having a sticker of some sort made up ?
It could be applied to the Dcon badge without covering it up.
Even something as simple as just the AL logo.

Sorry, I edited my post while you were posting.

I added this:

"Also, just out of interest my little yellow DragonCon card has my legal name on it - will I be able to change it to my 'real' (i.e. the one that everyone knows me by) name when I register?"

No unfortunately- your pass will have what you pre-registered with. The first year I went my pass read:

KEVIN BURTON
Kevin Burton

Eventually I started asking for SSgt Burton over the phone (you can also choose your nickname registering on-line as well)

...Your real name isn't Harry Harris?!

WHO ARE YOU!!!!

Back in 2005 I got a Stargate Command Sticker from someone and put it on my badge. That would be a great idea.

So... we have to stop everyone who walks by, check their badge, and hope that the name on the DragonCon badge has something to do with their AL screen name so we can recognize who they are?

Remember, people have real names, nicknames, AL screen names, TK numbers, RPF screen names, e-mail address names, other costume group names, and even just goofy joke names that they put onto their DragonCon badge.

We need something that goes on top of it, or is worn on the lanyard that other AL members can spot from across the room so that we can spot fellow members even when not in costume.

One of the biggest problems I have at DragonCon every year (besides that Kevin guy touching me where the bathing suit covers) is that after the weekend I look at other people's pics and go, "Oh, so that's who that guy was! I wanted to talk to him, but didn't realize who it was!"

Why? Because I was looking for "Rook" (for example), but the guy I was talking to had the name "Russ" on his badge and I never made the connection.

This way, the new ID card thing will have our screen names on it so we can figure out who each other is.

In case someone is looking to talk to me, but can't find me because my DragonCon badge says "Spat" instead of "Spatman".

It happens.
