As per a discussion with Derek Smith, I am organizing a funeral detail for our friend for Chris to be held at DCon this year. Given the nature of this event, we ask that you wear (in order of preference): Dress blues, or Service C, or Operational Dress without armour, or formal attire.

There are several positions to fill, please indicate your preference and copy & paste yourself into this list:

Ok I'm a bit confused-

The first post has only two positions open for flag folders. There are no other positions listed.

Rex's post has several positions open. Are these available too?

The two positions I was most interested in seem to be filled already (N.America Flag Folder and Colour Guard).

I'll have a full set of Dress Blues by D-Con. I'm in for this regardless of the position really. We will do Chris proud.

Rex posted before we changed a few things. I spoke to him today and he likes the new plan better .The whole thing has been changed..per a conversation Dom, Airborne Mike, and myself had today...Mike brought up a real good point..therefore, the original plan is going to be altered...we only need two people to fold the flag. Rex has already volunteered from the US side..now all we need is a member of the UKCM.

What we are planning to do is...assembly at the point where the sweep started last year..that way we can have privacy and be able to stand in a circle like last years video shoot...we are going to say a prayer and maybe say a few words to Chris..we will have a moment of silence and present the flag to Joy. We would like everyone to at least have Dress Blues, a Service C, or BDUs..but NO ARMOR!!

We felt that after 9 months, it would be better to celebrate Chris' life, rather than bring us all down with the ceremony I had discussed with Dom earlier. We will, however, save an empty seat at each restaurant in honor of our missing man..

Perhaps instead of representing North America and the UK, we could represent the USA, UK and Canada?



I too will have a full on USCM Dress Blues uniform. Looking good to score the elusive jacket!

And as for public speaking, I was on the Parlimentary Debate Team in college, studying acting for 3 years, DM a D&D Campaign - Role playing to the extreme, , etc. etc. Did lots of "talking in front of folks" over the years...

Pretty comfortable with it...

Good point Rex... what I could do is arrange for a UACM or UKCM member to be the flag bearer then you and the third member fold it and present it to Joy.

Although we'll key down the pomp and circustance from my original post, Kevin... I would prefer everyone to be in the sharpest uniform available to individual members.

After some discussion with a few of the board members, we felt that doing this may bring up too many bad feelings.

Wow, I don't know what to say. So rather than take the risk of a few people felling sad you decided not to do anything at all. Kinda lame if you ask me.

You should at the very least have a moment of silence in Chris' honor when you gather for the parade. Chris was an key part of the parade every year. This year there's going to be an empty spot in the formation. To not acknowledge and / or honer it in some form of fashion wold be a real shame imo.

If I'm off base here, I apologize. Loosing Chris really hit me hard, and I was looking forward to honoring his memory with my (and his) fellow USCM's.

With all due respect, who ever said anyone isn't going to honor Chris? Your statement is rather a blanket one, seemingly indicating that because this ceremony isn't taking place that no one is going to honor Chris in some way, which as far as I'm aware simply isn't the case.

Kudos to Dom and anyone else attempting to see the bigger picture and not offend anyone. It's not Dom's sole responsibility to take care of and organize everything; I'm pretty certain anyone can organize anything they so choose... so putting the blame on his shoulders seems rather out-of-place.

I for one know that I will be honoring Chris in my own way by Marching in the parade and doing the colony sweep and to gather with my AL brethren (and sistren).

I'm pretty sure we're going to be having over a hundred moments of silence for Chris over the course of the weekend. As well as a whole lot of Chris specific things going on at the dinner on Saturday night, as well as any other time when there are more than 2 Marines together. No one is going to be able to stop that from happening.

Chris will be well covered, even without the funeral procession.

And I agree with Dom that the funeral procession during the parade would have been rough.

And Dom, my post isn't an attack or blame on you. Sorry if it came out that way. But what I got from your post is that there wasn't going to be any memorial or service.

Since I'm not going to be in the parade or joining you guys for any of the dinners this was going to be one key event I didn't want to be absent from. I just got a little "bent" when this wasn't happening.

It 's always hard to 'read' what people a saying when they type things out on a board. This is an emotional subject and I don't want this getting out of hand.

Hopefully I'll be around some of you guys at the right moment to share a drink and toast to Chris.

I may have been a little brief with my answer, so I apologize for not elaborating as to why we're not doing a funeral service.

When I originally planned this event, Airborne Mike told me the theory of how a soldier dies four times: Once on the battlefield, once more when loaded on the aircraft, once more when he arrives to his home country and finally again when he is burried.

With this in mind, we didn't want Chris to die one more time. This in no way is a decision on how no one will remember Chris during DCon. Many thoughts, prayers and toasts shall be made in the memory of our fallen brother. I plan on having a moment for him during the USCM breakfast.

Bottom line? We'll be celebrating Chris' life as opposed to mourning his death.

Although, what was decided, or rather suggested my Airborne Mike, was that we will leave an open seat at each dinner, with the chair leaned forward against the table, and raise a toast for him. Its simple, yet honoring of this great man. If anyone wants to say a few words at the toast, Im sure no one would mind. I, myself, will say a few words Im sure, but I know I will get choked up...

OK.. I may not truly have a right to chime in here since 1. I did not know Chris and 2. I am not going to D-C this year...

But to me in MY Opinion..

The best way to show respect and to honor is celebrate that persons life. I would not want people upset and crying as I like to make people laugh and have a good time. If Chris was that kind of person then he too would want you all to remember the good and friendship he shared with you all.

I do Like the thought of the tipped chair at group meals. Maybe a card with his name on it might be a good way to let people know who you're honoring.
