Wow, what a great convention. Not as fun as DCon, but for me more enjoyable because the convention was all about prop and model making and a lot about the film making process.
It was great hooking up with all the Aliens Legacy members. Thanks to Tony & Cherie for letting Gareth and I crash. Well done to Gareth for bringing out the best in Abe. This time around he got to accompany Veronica Cartwright on stage at the local cinema for a 30th anniversary Alien screening, not to mention fun and games with Bob Burns (see G's pictures). We got some great footage for my Fox documentary.
Special thanks to Richie and Stephen for one of the shows highlights – their Alien space suit as worn by Kane in the movie. This is a magnificent piece of work and had Veronica and Bob gobsmacked. It is one of the finest pieces of Aliens fandom I have yet seen. It is easily the most impressive costume I have ever seen. Really well done guys. I know the members here will get a kick seeing it at DCon.
We also got to meet the delightful and funny Tom Woodruff, Jnr and Pat McClung – a man happy to spend time talking about Aliens with such fondness. Not to mention his more recent work.
Thanks to Michelle, Tony, Stephen and Richie who all presented Aliens Legacy Gold Awards to Pat, Tom, Veronica and Bob. These went down very well and are establishing the Aliens Legacy as the premiere fan community for these movies. These presentations are putting us on the map. The filming of these awards for the next Aliens box set should see that through. Thanks to Russ Krook, Mike Rush, Jason Stead and Harry for making this happen in time for Wonderfest. And thanks to all our members at Wonderfest for attending the presentations.
Ah, the Pulse Rifle... Yes, I did break the prototype(!). My heart skipped a beat. I was handed the PR and I didn't know it was resin. It didn't look like resin, not even up close. I was handed it and naturally I put my finger on the trigger and it came off as I gently squeezed. I nearly died! Dan was great and was happy to talk about/promote the PR on camera. It probably didn't occur to Dan to warn me it was resin (and delicate), so I really didn't know. However, it was a clean break and he said it was easy to fix. But still, it was one of those moments where you just felt, "Oh!! Bollocks."
The PR looked amazing. I'm no expert on the PR's, so I can't tell you how accurate it all is, but it looked brilliant to me. In terms of finish I can confirm it is outstanding. I also think it is easily the best value for money PR that I have yet seen. I will definitely be saving for one of these. I would fail to see how anyone could possibly be disappointed with this amazing piece.
I shot some footage for my film, but I will be posting this on the board here for all to see in about a week. I know most guys here have a huge interest in this, so I thought I'd shoot some details and close ups for you all to see.
There where also some great Aliens sculptures there including a 1:1 bust. Again, see Gareths pictures.
All in all, a memorable convention and one where we were treated especially well. I heartily recommend Wonderfest to everyone. I have contacted the organiser with a view to an Aliens theme in 2011 for the 25th anniversary of that film, so fingers crossed something will happen then.
Andrew
