If I rubbed some shoe polish (brown or black) over certain parts of my clothes to dirty them and then run them through the wash, would that create a convincing dirt/muck look?
Has anyone else done this before?

To my knowledge the polish wouldn't stain the material enough....it would just come off in the wash.
Best you'd get is some slight discoloration.....thats about it.
I could be wrong, I've never tried it but I've had polish on clothes before and it came off.

After you wash them with varying degrees of bleach, I used an antique with an airbrush. It dulled the colors and thus made them looked worn. You can take some sandpaper to the garment.
