The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Did you ever think about that? I didn't know. So now if I made a major security situation out of it, everybody steps in, administration steps in and there's no exclusive rights for anybody. Nobody wins. So I made a decision and it was wrong. It was a bad call Ripley. It was a bad call...

So the theme of all the movies seems to point out the arrogance of men. We think we can control the uncontrollable.

So what if Burke had mad a major security situation out of it? Would that have saved the lives of the colonists?

What if spunkmeyer has shut the freaking door?

What if they left somebody on the Sulaco?

What if "B" gun had more than 500 rounds.

SO here is the point, What is the simplest thing that could have happened to prevent the most devastation?
Yes it is a moot point, no matter what the humans do, the Aliens will still make sure we get our 90 minutes worth.

There's one thing that has always kinda bothered me...
What if the marines had fallen back after finding out they couldn't use their pulse rifles? Or shut down the reactor so no coolant was needed?

Would have been a slightly different story I think.

still though, i think it was inevitable that the xenos would have gotten off the planet eventualy, iehter by some human stumbling on the planet or anyhting else and eventualy spreading across the universe. my point is at least it happened there and not here on earth. sorry colonist, you had to take one for the team.

Nice, but I can think of a better one. Ignoring the distress call.

Someone had to discover the danger and die.

Best thing is if someone in the Company had realised the badness outweighs the benefits and just nuked the planet.

Unlike leaving Kane outside, ignoring the distress call was against protocol. If they had done what they were supposed to they could have come out of it safely (except for Kane) and also gotten paid!

I wonder if Ash was motivated by a percentage, like Burke was....

Open door, take back creature, get paid from BioWeapons Divn.
Retire, marry a crabby old ZX81 and spend rest of existence perving over latest model iPods......

Yes IF, Perhaps IF not...

I tell you guys IF they realy left Kane Outside or didnt follow the call, do you realize what would have happened? I can tell you: We never, never , never, never would have seen Ultracool Colonial Marines- and -that is the sad part: We never would have had The Legacy Board!! We never would have met!! If anyone feels like crying, that is okay- go on, don´t hesitate.

RE: "Why didn't they just shut off the reactor?"

Well, if you subscribe to the 'single atmosphere generator' theory... the air would run out... eventually. :)

If you subscribe to the multiple generator theory... no reason.

I think it was the fact that besides Burke, nobody really expected to find anything hostile there. Thus the 'primary heat exchangers' issue was a non issue until Ripley got a clue.

Always a day late and a neo-dollar short that one. ;)

Good discussion idea Joe.

Interesting Thread, okay I'll bite.

If they would have left Kain outside the same events would have occured just in a different time line.

1. Kain Dies (no avoiding that): Crew sees what happens and wants no part of the alien leaves and returns home. The company asks WTF happened to Kain, crew explains it, and another science team goes to check it out.

2. Kain Dies: Crew isn't quite sure how and goes and checks it out. Either the alien kills them outside, or somehow gets in the ship. Ripley blows it out the airlock.

3. Kain Dies: (are we senceing a theme here) Ash realizing his mistake of letting a hostile organism into the ship blows it up with everyone still inside. Making the film 30 minutes long.

4. Lambert decends into the hole, breaking the theme here, and is the one who is impregnated with the alien. Lambert Dies, and Kain (who was secretly in love with her) kills Brett with an Inkpen after starting up the "Bonuses" complaint again. Parker so upset that he now has to fix the ship by himself, and since they are in the kitchen anyway, stuffs Dallas' hand into the Coffee Grinder. Dallas feints from pain, and Ash sedates Parker, and takes them both to the lab. Ash, interested in what causes the hostility of humans, creates the virus (later used in 28 days later) and infects Parker. Parker, of course crazed by the virus, eats Dallas. Ash consumed by his mistake disembowls Parker with the Cattleprod and covers up the mess by mixing it into the food processor. Ripley witnesses the food makings and examines Ash to find out he bleeds warm milk. She tries to further examine him to later find out Ash is a Pleasure replicant and is currently on the run. Of course she confuses him with the scale of a snake and shuts him off after a convo about some battle with big walls. Ripley is later consumed by the madness and takes herself out. The Alien totally confused by the Hostility blows itself out the airlock leaving Kane. Kane, of course, returns home a hero, becomes Chancellor of the Uk and is later killed by "V." Did I miss anybody???

The disussion about the myriad of different cases and actions that could have taken place leads me to one awareness:
James Cameron exactely chose - out of the myriad of possibilities- the right actions to make a film that 22 years still fascinates us. That to me seems much more difficult, especially if you take a look at the crap that runs nowadays at theaters...

Jonsey hearing the food processor being activated, and believing its Tuna being mixed up for him, runs over and eats the mess right out the processor. Of course being infected by the "Virus," Later dubed "The St. Mary's" virus, he runs off to hide in his insanity. He is later found, with Kane, in the Uk and is what brings about the True Events seen in 28 Days Later.

See how I put together the true life events as shown in Alien, 28 Days Later, and V for Vendetta? Now I must go hide as MI-6 is now looking for me for revealing state secrets.

Ripley could have taken over from Gorman sooner. Would have saved a few Marines.

If Burke had gone and made a major situation out of it, the only difference is that a whole different bunch of people would have been exposed and "infected".

ICC and the CA would have stepped in, a special team sent in to investigate...possibly with Weyland Yutani in tow.
Same thing, different day.

And if the initial distress signal had been ignored, or simply had not been received, it would only be a matter of time before someone DID investigate it...or if the signal had stopped, someone would have scouted out the planet and found the ship.
Again, same outcome, different day. Never underestimate the power of human couriosity and our own ability to destroy ourselves.

I think Parker had the best chance(s) to alter the course of history. He was going to stab Ash's chestburster (which may have burned him pretty bad with the acid, but he may have killed it in turn) and he had a chance to torch the alien but Lambert screwed that up. Also, in the novelization, Parker had a chance to blow the alien out of an airlock but he was sabotaged by Ash. Hmmm, Parker always seems to have the right idea. I think he's an unsung badass from the movies.

Back to topic...

I think Gorman should have recognized the danger and let the grunts keep their ammo, BUT with strict orders to keep collateral damage to a minimum. The aliens would have to be wiped out one way or another; at least a sweep and clear by the Marines offered the processor a chance at survival; as opposed to a nuke. But that still wouldn't prevent the dropship from crashing. Why didn't Ferro just stay in the air? Or at least keep the ramp closed? WTF, did Spunkmeyer just have to go out and take a leak or what? Can't that sissy hold his bladder?

Well holding Alien to what happened, best way to avoid what happened? Have Ripley never get picked up at all and eventually turn into a popsicle. Sure eventually the colonists may have found the ship, but hey might have gone better for the Marines sent in afterwards.
