Isn't it always the way... You're just about to have something to eat, you turn on the TV and there's something nasty on...

I've just seen a large, not particularly pleasant placenta on TV.

I'm not sure what to say...

I've always thought that small babies look a little like lizzards. In fact Bill Cosby made the same comment in his book "Fatherhood".
However, nothing could have prepared me for the sight of a large liver-like organ that I know came from a female body!

When they showed the membrane that the foetus is wrapped in, all I could think of was that wonderful "dog birth" scene in Alien³...

Now I'll never be able to stay with my wife during birth without thinking of that!

I know alot of men and women think it's a wonderful miracle but I can't help but think that there's bound to be something less hideous...that the human race just hasn't evolved far enough yet... :lol:

It was an interesting program but bloody hell!
The idea of a great big lump of pigs liver falling out of the woman I love is almost enough to put me off sex forever...almost. ;)

Mind, they did actually show a birth toward the end. In a birthing pool so it wasn't particularly messy. At one point I was practically shouting at the TV, "there's a head...it's a HEAD...a HEAD! Ugghhh!!"

I'm a little worried...what if I end up having kids and there's my wife, just delivered and over the moon and all I can think of this small, slimey, purple lizard that she's holding is "hmm, it looks a bit like Giger's 'Vomit Creature' from 'Poltergeist 2'..."

I'm not convinced that's the kind of sentiment that will make my future wife particularly happy... :roll:

As long as you don't actually say it to her face you'll be fine. ;) Besides, you'll be too busy checking out your new baby that you won't even notice the placenta.

I don't actually remember a lot of my labour as I was completely off my head on the gas and air. And I can't comment on the actual pushing the baby out thing as I had to have an emergancy c-section.

When my little boy was born, I don't even remember seeing that. Heck, even my wife doesn't know what they did with it!

There was so much going on and so many people in the room, and I was way more interested in the well being of my wife and staying close to our newborn son.

I have to agree there Dropship. The birth of my 2 sons was something I will treasure. The details like what they do with the placenta and things are when considered when you see the new life.

I use to get freaked thinking about it til our first son was born.

I'm new here, but this is something I have some experience with. My wife has had 3 boys, each one a c-section. I was there for every single birth. The placenta is nothing once you get to see a c-section! They wrap some organ in gauze and set it on her chest to get to the baby! Its amazing. Creepy, but amazing.

She had c-sections because we make man sized babies. 12 lbs 8 oz, 9 lbs 10 oz, and the preemie (came 1 month early) at 8 lb 10 oz.

Yeah, I'm proud of that.

Placenta eaters creep me out though.

My brother-in-law is from Burkina-Faso. The tradition among his people is to bury it inside a specially prepared clay pot. Not sure why.

My sister had a clay pot made for him as a birthday gift 3 month before the birth of their son. He was really touched - didn't expect it from a European. :wink:

Damn! That's some big babies! Mine was only 7lb 6oz and after 26 hours of labour she still didn't want to come out, hence the c-section.

That's nice about the pot. I suppose it might have something to do with stopping animals trying to dig it up and eat it.

I suspect something more esoteric. The Mòoré are a very superstitious folk who still embrace their animist traditions.

Yeah, I know that they do something similar in the Far East and depending on your astrological sign they plant a certain species of tree or plant above it.
