Post subject:  Question about dog tags and Viet Nam era

Around the time of Viet Nam, did soldiers use black electrical tape or rubber bands to bundle their tags together so they wouldn't make noise?

This is sort of out there, but it's for a project I'm working on.

I'm not an authority on the subject, but I'm sure someone may have done or thought of it. I myself have a set of dogtags that I reserve for exercises that have a paracord sleeve over the beaded chain.

I don't know about rubber bands, but I know for a fact they used black electrical tape. My cousin used to have my uncles and it still had the tape on it.

My guess though is that it was a "whatever you have" so most likely some used tape and some used bands.

Since the aussies & kiwis had come from fighting in Malaya & Borneo insurgencies, they picked up some tricks...

Replaced the ball chain with nylon 'hootchie' cord. In the heat (wet & dry) the nickel off the chain left a nasty 'nickel rash'.

The chain had a tendancy to break when not required, or hang tough otherwise.

The hootchie cord also allowed thumb knots to be placed around the primary (hexangonal) and secondary (circular) tags. This allowed a WIA/KIA to have the 2ndary tag removed as part of dustoff/casevac SOP while the primary stayed on the body.

This greatly minimised mix-ups especially with multiple casualties.

As exposure to mines increased, common practise was to place a spare set in the lacing of the boots.

It was a case of making sure as many bits got to go home...

I got a memory of one tag secured in the Jungle Boots Lace and the other remains on the Dog Collar...in case there's several pieces spread around of GI's...., need to re put togather for Mass Burial
Perhaps some G. I. O.D. Duck Tape to reduce the brightness signature of the metal :?
