Will 10lbs of thrust lift a 10lb rocket in the air or is it a different formula?

Newton's third law staes that "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction."

Technically 10lbs of thrust shouldn't lift 10lb rocket as you'd need to account for the weight of the rocket. If the rocket weighs say 5lb then 5lbs of thrust should make it 'weightless', 16lbs should just about get it off the ground. Add more thrust for more lift.

Why would it take 16lbs of thrust to lift a 5lb rocket?

Since thrust is counteracting gravity, shouldn't it take 6lbs? Thrust-Rocket Weight (6-5) equals effective thrust. Or am I oversimplifying (sorry, I'm not the rocket scientist in my group, that would be my buddy).

Ok, just for a little nitpicking:
Thrust would be lbf or N and mass is lbs or kg - this is often confused.

Cheers,
Stefan

Okay -- air-speed velocities, typos, and nitpicking aside... you guys are missing the most obvious question:

It is going to be good, hopefully I will have time to work on it this weekend. I am going to document the process.
