Please see the update (09-07-2006) on page 2. ;)

----------------------------------------------------

Oh what has happened to my hero.

Arnold, Arnold... What have you done? (Obviously not a lot of training.)

And for Godsake's please put on some shorts.

I'll never be able to watch The Terminator the same way again. :(

Ironically I saw this image for the first time, after joining a gym last weekend. Arnold was my inspiration when I first began training in 1990. I had trained for 13 years, competing in two bodybuilding contests at the beginning of my athletic career. In 2003 (just after D-Con) my job put me on the nightshift ending my workout regime (for what I thought was for good).

After a 2 1/2 year layoff, I finally decided to go back to the gym this month and regain my former physique. I already feel great considering it's my second week of training. I'll have my old guns back in no time. But damn! Who knew going back would be so hard! It's like starting all over again. :o

I have had layoffs of a few months to a year in the past, and have always managed to retain a fair amount of stength, but I guess this one was a little too long. I'm using the weights of schoolchildren. For instance I did some squats today- no bullshit: back in my heyday I used to squat with over 300 lbs on my back. Today I was using less than 100 and making it look hard.

Oh well. It just takes time. At least I'm getting great pumps! Feels good to wear a tank top again! ;)

I wish it was. But alas I have seen a few pics like this floating around now (including the cover of The National Enquirer under "Best/Worst Beach Bodies Exposed").

Here's another:

Talk about letting yourself go. :(

And to think he was in phenomenal shape for T3 (at 57 years of age) a mere 3 years ago.

It's a photoshopping conspiracy... it has to be!

Just say it ain't so Sarge... say it ain't so!

Is it possible that he made a deal with Lucifer early on in his career, and finally now Arnie has begun to repay his debt?

Those photos just can't be real. Come one... they're published by the National Inquirer for the Queen's sake!

But seriously Kevin, good job jumping back into the workout routine... I can relate, albiet on a smaller scale -- no bodybuilding competition training in my past. ;)

I had stopped working out shortly around September of last year, and finally picked it back up about a month ago. It really is amazing how slowly I had to start out... but only a month later my body remembers what it could do and now I'm on a roll again. I just have to work a little harder on my diet, and try to cut back on the cola intake.

Gotta look good for the girls come Dragon*Con in fall. ;)

Something like that- I was thinking along the lines of The Picture Of Dorian Gray.

And thanks for the support guys. I'll be back into the swing of things in no time! :D

Those pics are the real deal. Depending on his movie role at the time, he only works out a few months before shooting begins to put himself back in "fighting trim."

I know I was scared the first time I saw those. Just goes to show that even our favorite actors can let their hair down... so to speak.

Good luck on the workout plan Kev!

He's an old man. Let him get old! It's OK! Even Clint Eastwood is sagging and bagging and he does keep with the regular workouts.

You put a picture of anyone at 30 next to them at 60, and there's bound to be some wear and tear!

For instance:

People get old.

I think he aged a lot after he became the Governator. He didn't look like that back in 1994 when I saw him in person at Dunhill's cigar room in San Francisco.

I've always been told that if you lift and then you stop -- you would become more flabby, fatty versus a person who has never lifted.

BTW -- Yeah .. I used to lift weights. But I found them to be really heavy, so I put them down.

I've also started trying to work out again. I became a bit of a slacker these last few years because of work commitments. But I decided that it was time to start over and do it right. So instead of only heavy weights, I've tried to mix in a good amount of cardio in there too and eating better. Now I'm running and doing the eliptical about 4 miles a day 5 days a week. I'm feeling a lot better already! I'm even breathing a whole lot better too. Add to that some good weight lifting and I'm really starting to feel a difference... and a more positive difference than before too.

Really glad to hear you're taking it back up, Kevin! You don't have to get back to your old physique, but I guarrantee you, once you are back into a "routine" you'll see huge leaps and bounds in changes. From the sounds of it you're already off to a good start in terms of getting into a routine. I totally know what you mean about the frustration of not being able to lift the same weights as you could use back when you were bigger. I'm still in no way able to lift the weights that I used to, but every week I'm getting closer. And that's kinda fun in itself. ;)

Regarding Arnold... that pic was from more than a year ago, possibly closer to two years ago. He certainly doesn't look the way he used to from back in the 70s, but he definitely doesn't look as bad as those more recent pics shown in this thread.

That might be true if you allow yourself to go to ratshit.

Take a look at Arnold's closest competitor (in film circles): Stallone-

Sly will be 60 next month and he still has a body that rivals a man half his age.

I know- it's hard watching your screen heroes get old and not really be shy about it. Especially with women- they can't look young forever. But when it comes to being in shape, I truly believe it is something you can do until you are six feet under. ;)

Alex,

Thanks for the support Bro! It's funny my mindset is very much like yours- I wasn't big into cardio ten years ago. If I wanted to look "cut" I would just adjust my diet. I only did cardio when I competed. Now I've decided to add it to my routine- I was doing the eliptical as well this week. It feels like I'm starting from scratch and I can do whatever I want. It's not like I'll be hitting the stage again- all I want is bigger muscles and a smaller waist. :)

I also got back into eating a bit more regimented as soon as I started. No more garbage food all the time, or late night snacking. And I'd watch the clock and think "Ok it's 3 hours; where's my tuna?"

Kevin, Stallone got back into this shape for his new boxing show, and his new Rocky flick.

But, here he is at 30 for comparison.

He doesn't look the same, does he? He still looks old in your photo and my point is there is nothing wrong with that. He looks how he should for his age, and his lifestyle. Doesn't make him any less a screen hero my friend.

Arnold doesn't make films anymore, but I'd hardly say he's gone ratshit. He's just not bulging with muscles.

When you're 60, lets compare some photos! ;)

Noeland with all due respect- I was fooled by the photoshop to begin with. Had I seen the original picture of Arnold I wouldn't have started this thread.

My whole point (going on the false picture) was that Arnold had allowed his body (not his features which I think you seem to focusing on)- to go to pot.

Stallone on the other hand seemed to maintain a respectable physique. Yes he may look old in the face, and his skin is not as resilient- but he still has a great degree of muscle mass. In other words... it can be done if you put in the effort.

That was my point- that Arnold had lost the effort to maintain his physique (which has now been proven untrue). This is something that can happen to a bodybuilder of any age if they just "give up".

So it's not about the deterioration caused by aging- nothing will stop that. It's about continuing an athletic lifestyle.

And if I do not "give up", at 60 I will look better than I do right now (at least bodywise). ;)
Kevin

As I said at the beginning of the thread- I joined a gym back in May after a 2 1/2 year layoff from working out. Now after 6 weeks I'm finally getting my old form back- sure didn't take as long as I thought it would. ;) :)

Here a look over the years---

Here I am in 2003- probably a couple of months before I quit training. For anyone wondering, I quit because my job switched me to the nightshift from 10pm to 6:30am. I just didn't have the motivation to workout anymore. :(

And now after a year of nightshift in Sept 2004 (at D-Con). God I looked like hell! Lost all my size and forgot what sunshine was!

In Jan of 2005 I was put back on dayshifts. And I (re)discovered the joys (and pitfalls) of eating a lot of food!

Looking rather portly at D-Con '05.

And now today. Finally getting my old shape back! There was a time I thought I'd never go back to the gym- boy am I glad I was wrong! :D
