Post subject:  Question to con-goers concerning blades

All right folks, I've never been to a con in costume, but I figure all the lads and lasses going there in full medieval, renaissance or ninja garb aren't toting actual metal blades, but rather replicas.

What's the usual way to get fake blades that do not look too fake? I'm trying to put together an alternate D-con costume(s), more XVIIth century/First Empire, but I'd hate to have a toy rapier looking more phony than a politician's campaign promises.

Anybody out there makes, or knows where to have made, resin/wood/hard plastic/whatever swords?
And, actually, while I'm at it, any references for finding muskets replicas?

Any help will be much appreciated. :D

Actually, depending on the con, the blades usually are real.

You have to check with that particular convention's policy regarding weapons.

DragonCon lets you carry pretty much anything, but security will zip tie the weapon in the sheath so it can't be drawn out. This is called "Peace Binding".

Hope that helps!

Like Spat said, most of them are real, though they typically of the cheap wall hanger variety. Heck I think there were 3 sword vendors at D'con last year. As far as Musket replicas, depends on what you want. You might look for an English Civil War group, I've seen a few on the net.

o_O Cool then, that'll certainly make things a lot easier! :D

Right. I think I've found a site that offers affordable muskets. Anyone ever heard of them? www.by-the-sword.com
Just checking in case they're notoriously crap.

I guess I'll get my great-great-grandad's sword cleaned up a bit. Not quite the right period, but it'll do.

Thanks for the info and quick answers, guys, you rock as usual.

Heard of them. Never used them but also haven't heard anything bad. My guess is that they are reselling Denix stuff so they might not have it in stock (Denix's factory burnt down a year or so ago).
