The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Just trawling around for Darth Vader images and I came across this:

Moore To Script Thing Remake

Strike Entertainment and Universal Pictures will remake John Carpenter's SF horror movie The Thing, with Battlestar Galactica executive producer Ronald D. Moore writing the script, Variety reported. The 1982 original dealt with a shapeshifting creature from outer space that terrorizes researchers at an Antarctic station. That film in turn was a remake of the 1951 classic SF movie The Thing From Another World, which was adapted from the 1938 short story "Who Goes There?" by legendary SF author John W. Campbell Jr.

Strike partners Marc Abraham and Eric Newman will produce, and the company will co-finance the remake, to which Universal owned the rights. David Foster, who produced the 1982 film, will executive-produce.

The producers said they consider the new film to be more "a companion piece" to the Carpenter film than a note-for-note remake.

Universal is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM.

remake of a remake? Am I the only one who is apprehensive about this?

I honestly don't understand the mentality there. Carpenter's The Thing is an absolute classic, hard to find fault with. Who wakes up in the morning and decides they should have another go at it? Surely the only reason to remake anything is if you think you can do it better!

That said, they remade The Fog too. I didn't see it. Why? Because I think the original is another classic and as scary as heck.

In those days Carpenter rarely put a foot wrong. :)

Got to agree with you 100% there Mike, as they say on Points of View: "why oh why oh why....".

John Carpenter certainly had a hot spell starting with Halloween and Escape from New York through to Big Trouble in Little China, we will have to sweep Ghosts of Mars and Vampires under the carpet though....

Indeed. I'm a big fan of classic Carpenter. I even enjoyed "They Live" (with none other than 80s old-school wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper).

Carpenter's The Thing was a fantastic retelling of the original story. It still gives me that feeling of trepidation if I watch it late at night. :D

However a remake of a remake doesn't surprise me. How many versions of Invasion of the Body Snatchers have there been? At least 4 or 5 I think.

And I probably will not watch this remake of The Thing.

Well remaking a b-movie that wasn't particulary done well in the first place (no offence meant to bodysnatchers fans, although the 70's version with Donald Sutherland was by far the best) then thats ok, I would like to see the old b-movies get a dust off and update, but why remake a movie thats #1 not that old in the first place (JC's Thing being only 24 years old) #2 was very good in the first place?

Seriously, how we react to a remake of Alien? or A New Hope? Serenity?

Although I am more than happy to see the remake of When Worlds Collide when/if it ever gets out of production hell.

I mean lets be fair, the studios should try remaking movies that were badly done and try to improve them. Heres a quick list of ones I would like to see remade (I just love my fantasy remake lists)

Day the earth stood still
Invaders from Mars (yes i know they already remade that, but it sucked)
Forbidden Planet (ok it was cool, but i wouldn't mind seeing it updated)
Micheal Mann's The Keep
Mysterious Island
It came from beneath the Sea

Although i must admit, it will be difficult to top the Ray Harryhausen effects in the last two.

Why.

Why.

Why.

This film stands up 100% and does not need remaking.

It will gain nothing, yet it will lose dignity with CGI and pretty boy/girl/ethnic token actors aimed at the mass market.

Why don't they just make a frikkin sequel?! Even if it was the same story in a different location, it'd be more worthwhile than this plan.

NAY! I say.

Indeed!

Carpenter's ending really left things hanging and wide open to a sequel. Both actors who played the main charaters at the end are still around today- they could play minor/cameo roles.;) :D

Right there with you Mike, I felt the same way when they announced Tim Burton was going to remake the Planet of the Apes.

Before you know it they'll be remaking Jaws and Alien!

I swear Hollywood is fresh out of ideas and just sees the need to remake everything.

The remake of 'The Fog' wasn't worth watching. Infact most of the new ones are not worth remaking.

But to be honest......what would they do if they didn't do remakes?

When Worlds Collide - great story but badly done. Still a classic in my eyes. Would be interesting to see a new version though.

Let's not forget that they've (for some reason) deemed it necessary to remake and update romero's dead trilogy. I'll admit that the 90's remake of night was awesome and the 2004 dawn remake was pretty good. I won't say much for day of the dead remake since it looks like shite. I found it quite pointless to remake them since they are classics not to mention dawn of the dead 1978 is the best zombie movie ever made. It just goes to show that hollywood is running out of idea's and they just remake films to make a quick buck.

The Thing is one of my favourite films ever. The only thing I can think of that I would change, is the bit where he tips his drink into the computer (I'd edit it out).

A remake can only be worse (the effects certainly).

The 80's special effects were absoloute peak- perfectly ustilising real materials for visual effect.

You won't get anything like that ever again, especially in a remake probably using the 'more cg is more impressive!' philosophy.

I remember watching alot of the original version after seeing carpenters remake. The first one was surprisingly scary for such an older film and carpenter did a really good job on the remake. There's not much room there left to improve upon, so I fear it may not do so well and give the name a slight bad taste when mentioned.
