The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I believe Alex Wakal did one. He also made a real steel firing blaster from a C96 Mauser. The airsoft M712 has been on my list of "things to do" for a long while now. :)

I did one with a Denix replica Mauser. I thought about the M712, but since it's the wrong model, I lost interest.

How is it different? Is there a better airsoft version?

There's only two airsoft versions currently, and one of them is a copy of the other, but made out of metal. :)

The Denix is a solid metal non-firing replica with all the moving parts.

The airsoft versions are made by Marushin (2 versions, both plastic, Non blowback. One regular, the other with a "metal finish" paint job. If you buy a Marushin, DON'T get the metal finish. It rubs off. Trust me on this. :( ) and the other is made by HFC and is all metal non-blowback. It does ship with a long magazine, so you'll need to get a short mag to make a semi-accurate blaster.

The Marushin's are $115 and $130 (Standard and metal finish) and the HFC retails for about $125.

I haven't seen a DL44-accurate airsoft version yet.

Here is a picture of a C96:

And here is a M712:

The 712 has a removable magazine and selector switch, that's the primary difference. However, if you're set on an airsoft version, it's the only choice I know of.

Those are the main differences. The real steel M712 was full auto capable, hence the reason for the selector lever on the side of the frame.

You can buy a flush fit magazine as well to get it closer to looking like the C96, but that selector lever will be the big problem "detail."
