Just wondering...

Is the PR barrel shroud custom made item or can I source it somewhere?
I always figured it might be made from some sort of cable conduiting, although I've never seen anything exactly like it before.
Or, do I need to carve one out of lump off alloy sheet?

It's a made item. There are various sources... hopefully they will contact you. Most makers create it out of either sheet steel or, more likely, out of sheet aluminum. They are either stamped or milled.

They are usually referred to as barrel vents. There are generally 2 types of barrel vents: 10 hole barrel vents with the front barrel support integrated as part of the barrel vent, or 8 hole barrel vents with the front barrel support that's a seperate piece. Both are used in the film. Take a look at the reference photos on the net.

IIRC in a previous thread, someone (I think it was Stephan) made theirs from a length of 40mm radius corner box section and milled it to shape/cut the slots in it. After that the 2 side are simply bent inwards slightly.

As you can get that paticular cross section of box tube in either steel or aluminium you can pretty much go for either.

Personally Id go for the steel as that would allow the barrel support tube to be welded into place easier especially if doing the 10 hole variety.

The Spas is attached at 2 points, the back just below the shroud and at the very front where it fits over the thompson barrel. Its not just the support for the sling, it also takes alot of the cage weight too.

What I meant by barrel support tube was the small tube section that is often part of the vent.

Seperate barrel support tube (8 hole type):-

'built in' barrel support tube :-

Thanks to whover the pictures belong to :) Ive collected so many images Ive no hope of keeping track. If you want them removed email me.

Barrel support tube?

Given that I'll be using an airsoft Thompson, are you saying that I need to sleeve the barrel, or do you just mean the small triangular piece on the muzzle?

I thought that was what uscmCorps meant by an 8-hole or 10-hole vent?

I'm still not sure about making the muzzle support. By the time I need to make it I might have the facilities to mold it out of resin. Of course, it's supposed to be the attachment point for the sling so it should be metal, I guess. I might have a think about making a triangular frame out of metal and then putting it in a mold and casting the "proper" shape, including the round muzzle support, around the metal core. That'd allow me to attach a small eye-bolt through the metal core for the sling.

Of course, I'm open to other suggestions.

Ok. gotcha.

I was thinking of the same part. I wasn't considering that the nade launcher "hangs" off the barrel.
I've seen PRs built with a strip of metal along the top of the SPAS cage which bolts to the receiver. I think I'll try to rig up something like that, rather than putting the weight of the nade launcher and the stress of a sling on the muzzle end of an airsoft un barrel.
