Phill, Which country do you reside in?
There are a few states in the US where apparently airsoft ownership is "illegal." However, it's still a terribly grey area.
"Ownership" in Canada is legal. "Importation" is what's under fire by the RCMP.
Importation and ownership in Germany is now legal as long as the item in question only shoots single shot. Full auto is apparently still illegal.
Not 100% sure on the current legality in the UK. From all appearances it's legal to import and own, but there's been some rumblings that that may change in the future (or may have changed already).
Um... It's legal in Japan. And Hong Kong.
The problems that people in the US & Canada run into is that the "law" regarding copyright, trademark and what constitutes a "replica firearm" are not clear. Often, it's left up to the individual customs agent to decide that day what's legal and what's not. A few years ago when the whole "must have 6mm of orange paint on the muzzle" thing came up, one customs agent in Florida I believe confiscated several THOUSANDS of dollars in guns and equipment because he said that when the orange paint was scraped with a knife, it came right off. Well, duh! Eventually the owner of the shipments brought legal action for excessive abuse of power or some such thing, and he finally received his shipments and the offending customs agent was "re-routed" to another department.
Honestly, the totally arbitrary nature of the way it's handled by customs sucks, and someone needs to set things down in a truly black and white way to EVERYONE can get it strait.
But that's just my opinion.
