The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Heya,

Will a real Thompson magazine fit into and work with the TM Airsoft M1A1?

Since I'm not going to skirmish with mine, I don't need fully functional mags and I would rather not spend a fortune on Airsoft mags if the cheaper real ones will do.

Oh, and it is the 20rnd mags I need, isn't it?

Ta,
Woody.

Aw, knackers.

Is there anywhere I might pick up the right size mags that will fit and don't cost too much?

Define 'too much'.

Most places sell the 190 round mag for between £25-30. Doubt you'll find it cheaper.

Or you could chop down a 30rnd one.

Well, £25 seems an awful lot for a small thing that doesn't need to work (probably because I plan on buying at least six).
I had hoped the real 20rnd thing'd be workable as they're only about £12 a piece.
Might have to bite the 10mm Caseless on this one :?

Would the 'other brand' mags fit the TM?

Would a resin casting of a Thompson magazine work? I wonder if anyone like Matsuo makes them.

Its the T shape guide rail that is just a bit too fat to fit. I could prob skim it down on my miller if you wanna buy one real steel and let me have a go at it?

Matt's casting has the same fat T problem, but again could be modded.

Spat makes mags, but I think they'd need some work to fit in easily due to T shape bit as mentioned.

Or... You can do what I do to every Airsoft thompson that ever passes through my hands, and take a 3/16 or 5mm drill and open the slots up a little bit. On the airsoft mags this makes the relaods a lot easier and it allows just enough room for a real steel mag to fit.

Yeah I could, couldn't I.....
The Thompson's TMH is just plastic, so it should be quite easy to work.

Is it the width of the T-rail or the stem part that's the wrong size?
Or (knowing my luck) maybe both?

Hey Woody

If you go with the real mags it might be worth looking here.

http://www.rytonarms.co.uk/shop/shop.php
Look in the US Thompson SMG's section.

£45 (postage included) for 5 20 round mags. 8)

Got my deact Thompson from there and was happy with the sevice.

Aw, cheers Victim!!!
I'd found a fair few deals of 5 for £50, so was just browsing thier accessories, too.

I probably ought to get to the War & Peace show and see what other bits I might find...

Just did a little checking, the width is the biggest issue, I take the drill and run it down each groove in the Thompson frame going vertically first then pulling the bit out sideways and going up and down a bit to open the slot up some more, I also bevel the opening which allows for seating the mags quicker.

Also upon further checking the real steel mags the mag catch hole needs to be slightly higher by only 1mm or so. On very used and older mags this is done naturally, but on brand new mags you will have to grind it out a little bit, but not by much. If not the magazine lips jam up against the Airsoft chamber/hop up section.

Oh, fantastic - Thanks Guardian Matsuo!!!
Sounds like a pretty straightforward mod requiring naught but a bit of care and patience.

I'm off to order me some steel mags!!!

Over 1.7 million Thompsons were made. There must be loads of mags knocking about, surely?

I think I'm right in saying that most of the Thompson stuff on that site (guns included) came from Russia.

The Thompsons were sent over with Tanks as part of the war effort, but the Russians didn't use them.
Hence why they found loads of them still new and unused and brought them back for deactivating. 8)
