The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Gentlemen , please let’s take a step back and think about this. This is getting blown a bit out of proportion. All this talk about fire hazards, alarms, safety are good issues to raise, however, I detect way too much anxiety. First of all, if this water based fogger is such a hazard, no nightclub, haunted house, dance hall, party event, would ever use them. Don’t you think that all these places that are professionally run need to comply with health and fire codes? Don’t you think that all those places have fire alarms, smoke detectors and safety protocols? Uh, yeah, they do… at least a lot of the places I’ve been to. And yet they have no problems with their little portable water based fog machines. No violations, no health hazards, no alarms, no fires. IF PORTABLE FOG MACHINES SET OFF ALARMS OR PRESENTED A HEALTH HAZARD, THEY WOULD NOT BE USED IN ANY INDOOR VENUE. And I'm in NYC where they are paranoid about everything. Yet, fog machines are used. C'mon people.
Can they cause an electrical fire? Just as much a chance as any electrical appliance. Please stop fabricating embellished worst case scenarios before we’ve even tried this.
Now if we use this stuff and the hotel objects? We comply, end of story. What’s the crisis?
As for the extension cords. We are not going to run them up the middle of the floor for every guest to trip over them. Please give our common sense a little bit more credit. If any cords are needed, they will be positioned along the corners and not to pass underfoot of any pedestrian traffic. If the cords will present a hazard, then we don’t use them! What’s the crisis?

Good feedback and good to consider. But please, think it through.

Did you really think it's a good idea to rock up and assume it's OK without asking? I think any complaint from Hotel management to the convention organisers would affect our reputation.

I had an idea that electrical appliances and even full-scale smoke machines were in use in other places (even at DCon) but you can be damn sure they are with permission (and a risk assessment).

Since there are several DCon representatives who read this forum, do you not think it is worthwhile showing that we've considered the risks? Showing that we're thinking things through will make them more likely to give us more latitude (and permission) to do cool things.

Neatherworld and Cruxshadows have used them in the hotels before (that's where I got the idea). Like I said, if the hotel has an issue, we comply.

You don't think Netherworld and Cruxshadows asked permission first?

My point is... if they gave them permission, why not us? Unless they suddenly changed their policy.

I agree. But they won't give us permission if we don't ask.

No chicken-little-style disasters will befall us, most likely. But much more likely would be that a harassed mid-level volunteer for the con will see it, ask if we have permission and kick up a stink if we say no. And you're right - if we're lucky, they would say to turn it off and take it no further. But do we want to rely on luck?

The bottom-line is, I'm not in charge of the table (and I'm neither altruistic, social or healthy enough to even commit to a fixed time of manning it), so proceed as you wish.

Just dropped in on this thread... I really don't think a fog machine is necessary or even useful.

Wait til you see what's in store for the backdrop. Give it a chance..... if the hotel shoots it down, so be it.... but if not, just enjoy...

(keep in mind, we're not fogging the entire floor... this effect is subtle at most. Nothing will carry past the table.)

****and if we can't do it,... well, I get to keep the fog machine.. so it's a 'win-win' for me :)

No chance of a teaser for what is coming?

Didn't they charge for electricity before. Last year we charged our phones but a major electric draw? Yes we need permission. Yes they put on shows but contracts and insurance are in place. I think we have a great reputation with DragonCon so do we want to chance to tarnish that. I am all about a kickass table and helped put last years togther but we cannot take more than we are given. If we get in writing than we run with it but till than we should not assume anything.

Thanks!

Greg

Dcon got back to me and said the fog machine is a no go. They were very happy we asked before we did.

Did they mention electricity? I know from years past it is hit or miss.

Thanks!

I just called Jessica and reminded her she said she would get them. She says she has a supply run to do in a day or so, and will get them then.
