The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

As you may have seen, with a little help I've secured rooms in the Marriott for Dragon*Con 2012.

To help planning, I'm looking for an idea of numbers. So, I'd like the UKCM guys/gals who have a decent chance of attending (and want to be in the shared hotel rooms) to add their names to the list below. If you are attending but plan to book your own private room then feel free to add you name but make note of the fact that you don't need a space in the shared rooms.

The shared rooms are likely to be approx four people per room and are booked for Checkin on Weds 29th August, checking out on Tues 4th September. At this stage, you can sign up with no obligation (the room booking incurs no cost to me until July). However, if you find out later that you can't attend then I'd appreciate if you remove your name from the list to help planning.

As for flights: After a nightmare experience doing a group booking with Delta (we ended up going BA in the end that year ...) we have since booked flights INDIVIDUALLY to get the best price and avoid me being liable for the rather massive upfront cost ...

Looking at previous years, the best time to book flights might be in January 2012 during BA's January sale. However, I will be monitoring the price.

I will post more about flights shortly.

I've added my name to the end. If I'm allowed to go I'm going to be so hyper I don't think I'll be doing much sleeping and I hear the floor in the corridor is quite comfortable if need be.

It's actually possible to nap standing upright in the Marriott rave... The beat becomes hypnotic and soothing :)

Looking good!

Bear in mind that I'm not gonna be allocating people to rooms any time beforehand - I don't even know exactly how many rooms we will have nor how many people per room there will be! Likewise, cost per person for hotels is uncertain. A working assumption is "under $400" per person for all 6 nights.

Didn't see Gareth's call to book rooms for 2012 until it was too late, now the first tranche is sold out :(
Looked at just booking at Marriott direct but it's way too expensive at present.

Will try to book when the next wave of con rooms become available.

We got lucky this year and switched from a small hotel two blocks away to the Marriott two weeks before going - the rate worked out to be roughly the same as the con rate rooms. We're guessing it was a late cancellation.
Probably need to get a back-up room somewhere just in case we don't get lucky with a Marriott room.

Cheers,
Karyn

I'd recommend you book a full-rate Marriott room to have it in hand. The full-rate bookings involve no deposit and can be canceled up to the day of arrival I believe.

If it works out anything like last time, I don't think there will be no more Marriott rooms at con-rate. And cancellations won't be put back in the block. However, keep looking at the Passkey site just in case.

A couple of weeks before D*Con 2011, the rates for days before and after the convention on Marriott.com dropped dramatically (even below the convention rate!) but the conventions nights were showing sold out, so I was able to modify the full rate booking and make new bookings for the days before/after.

Hi G,
The only room the Marriot are offering at present is $2289.81, charged at the time of making the reservation

So decided not to do that!!!

Anyhoo have snagged a room down the road now, which will serve as a back-up. I will keep trying for a Marriot room at a cheaper price.

Cheers,
Karyn

:( That's new. Apologies - I didn't check.

But, keep an eye on it - Marriott.com seems to change it's mind day-to-day.

OUCH! :\

Thankfully there are loads of hotels in the area and most are decent, because of location.

I got my little blue card this afternoon. I was expecting a slightly different reaction from the one I got but ho hum...

So, keeping positive, what's next? When are we likely to have to book flights? Is there D*Con2012 email list I can get in on?
