The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I vote armor. But that's just me.

:)

And shipping to the UK for a set of armor is $60. Just so you know.

Honestly, I would say the armor. Rumor has it that there will be a TM knock off coming out soon that will be $100-$200 cheaper, so might as well go the Armor now than to buy the Pulse Rifle now and kick yourself if you can get the same thing in 6 months $200 cheaper.

Yea I say Armour too & I`m in the UK & actually Paypaling for my Spat Armour on Thursday.
I do have a Resin PR which I`ve had for a few years & will do till something better comes along. Armour though is something I don`t have.

Wookie Gunner,
Thank`s for that heads up on the knock off TM PR mate. I`ll be keeping my eyes peeled to replace my resin one.

I started with the Pulse Rifle and got the armour later... this was my order of preference. Even without armour, a USCM is recognizable by his weapon.

I think the marui m1a1 clone is out soon.

So unless your an avid airsofter, go with the clone+ the

G+P kit. You'll save some dough.

Get the upgraded armor first then.

These are not the Pulse Rifles you are looking for.

You seek Obi-Spat.

Eh, don't get me wrong... armour is nice, but it can be overrated sometimes.

You can always build it out of cereal boxes and duct tape and have fun painting it yourself if you really need to in a pinch. Heck, the Sarge (SSgt Burton) took existing off-the-shelve sports gear and painted it up to look quite the part at a fraction of the price.

You'll never be able to replicate a pulse rifle as easily or as cheaply.

My gut would say to go with the pulse rifle -- I highly doubt the upcoming cheaper knock-off will be anywhere near as close in feel, weight, and quality.

Plus, I thought I've heard something about a possible import ban of all replica weapons in the U.K., which I assume would include airsoft and model gun replicas as well. You may want to check into that and take that into consideration if applicable.

Just my .02¢ ;)

F.Y.I. This smart gunner breast plate...

...was built in about an hour or so with nothing more than cardboard, duct tape, and spray paint...

Corrugated cardboard has nothing on my ball-peen hammer -- and a little silver paint. ;)

That's what I was going to ask -- but I believe that is the only exception to my earlier statement. :P

Hmmm... I wonder if Jan's working on a 1:1 scale armour set yet. ;)

I started with the armor. Well, not true. I made my first expensive Aliens prop mistake by buying a Frontier Models Resin PR (*shiver*), sold it at a loss on ePay, and then got my armor.

With the availability of both resin kits and information (both of which were lacking when I started...) a PR is much easier to get now than it was 7 years ago.

So I agree, armor first, crappy pistol or shotgun as a stand in, PR later. :)

Or you can go all "ultimate badass" and make your armor out of metal like Ripstick did. ;)

But Spat's stuff is the best for the buck. And you don't have to assemble anything.

Rip, that BP is amazing. Would you mind sharing your measurements? I want to make one out of aluminum ultimately and your design is damn near perfect!

Oh yeah, that's right -- I did that too. ;)

About $20.00 in scrap aluminum reflectors, and probably another $75.00 in webbing, clips, rivets, and paint...

...in only two days.

Oh... but keep in mind the steel M1 helmet with liner ran another $25.00 with miscellaneous add-on parts totalling another $70.00 or so. This could have been done for about half the cost, but I used a fiberglass strike plate, fiberglass lobster tails, fiberglass ear defender flap, and a real Pentax 110 18mm lens for the helmet camera.

I still want to redo a few things on it before DragonCon this year, like fabbing up some new shoulder bells that are more screen-accurate, and maybe painting the camo on it -- but I usually tend to wait until the very last week. :P

Awesome job on that scratch-built pulse rifle Nick!

To be honest, it looked far too good to be completely scratch-built. All of the lines looked spot on! Don't think badly of Dom or myself for thinking it was papercraft at first glance... I cannot begin to tell you how many of us had been fooled into thinking papercraft builds were real before finding out they were nothing more than super light-weight pieces of folded paper and cardboard. Jan has done some outstanding work on those.

Although I can see how you could have done that scratch build on the cheap, for some reason I find it hard to believe that it would have been all that 'easy' -- at least not as easy for some. Even I would find such a scratch build somewhat intimidating -- which is why I opted for the Tokyo Marui and M41-A conversion kit. Regardless, wicked job on yours man! :D

Hey Sean, let me see if I can find those measurements for you. I got most of them from Jesse who I believe took them off of his Hi-Impact smartgunner breast plate. However, after translating them to paper and actually building the thing, I think I would scale my next one up a bit -- at least for my particular build anyways.

hey Ripstick! (nice bones brigade avatar btw!) Thanks for all the kind words about my PR man. well it was cheap cos i got all the plastic card for nothing from work (half price signs from a supermarket) and easy?....well, i took my time and just planned ahead. did my research and made mock-ups of the parts i wasnt sure how to build at first. that combined with a few tricks i have picked up along the way made for a certainly "not difficult" build. anyway ill shhhh now cos i dont want to hijack this thread anymore, sorry.

*cough* armor 1st *cough*
