at about 8:30 thursday evening 8-13-09 during routine prop making my left thumb came in full contact with the blade of my table saw, resulitng in a longitudnal jagged slice down the left side of my thum also effecting the bone and nail bed.

trip to the hospital and xrays revealed multiple fractures in the thumb and a small amount of missing bone. cleaning revealed a chunk out of my index finger and nail as well. got stitched and drugged and sent home ... i cant say the pain was unbearable cos I obviously bore it ... but all told the event is in front running as worst day of my life.

short term a great deal of pain and swelling, drugs are barely effective, and the strong antibiotics they gave me are making me sick to my stomach.

long term will likely be more surgury on the bone once the soft tissue heals recovery level is completely up in the air at this point which is not a reassuring thought, i just have to wait to see how it heals.

contact me if you are concerned about any ongoing projects I may have with you. i do plan to start working as soon as I am able but obviously there is a good chance I may not be able to make some dragon con deadlines as previously hoped. I have a lot of unfinished projects on the burner but i do have some trusted friends who under my direct supervision will help me finish my curent workload.

this is all very surreal and I'm having a hard time accepting it but i have to...its like a bad fucking dream

ACK! I cringed just reading this!

I am so sorry to hear this Matt.

I nearly cut off my left thumb in 2001 at work and needed immediate surgery to re-attach the tendons. It took 12 weeks to "learn" how to use my thumb again, but today it is like it never happened.

I wish you all the best of success for a full recovery Matt!

Yeah... ummm razorblade accident a year ago, both thumbs same time, luckily I missed everything but got 21 stitches and 2 sick scars.

I took a nice chunk out of my finger with a router one time... Got lose from me caught onto my finger... that was nasty.
