The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Can't find any references here, so forgive me if its covered somewhere but I can't find it.

Around my last Drop (at Polaris22), we had discussions about Ripley's clothes in Aliens.

The main focus of the discussion was if she has trousers or a folded down jumpsuit.

I was under the impression that she was wearing cargopants, but apparently its more of a flightsuit with the sleeves tied down around the waist.

I'd like confirmation before I commit to buying a jumpsuit for Kathleen...

It's movie magic at work; the original Bonhams auction in August 1987 lists Ripley's costume both as a one-piece ("a one-piece flying suit") and as a two piece ("grey battle blouse and trousers").

I always thought it was a jumpsuit at beginning of the film and then they swapped it out for the two piece at the end because it's more dramatic to have bare arms during a daring rescue. ;)

That was my original impression, but I started to strongly doubt when we had the discussion with Dom and Kev - none was 100% certain.

Thanks a LOT for that video!
I just realised I made the ammo straps completely wrong!
A little alterations and they'll be perfect.
Now, let's hunt the trousers again.
Oh, and some red/white shoes.

They released the shoes in mass a few years back, Rebook Bugstompers.

But I can't remember if they were made to look like Bishops shoes or Ripley's. They both had the same shoes, one was a hightop, the other was more of a "sneaker".

When it gets to that, I'll weather it down, no worries.

Besides, I'll need some dirty Newt clothes as well for my daughter.

At the beginning it must be a jumpsuit. Look at the video here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eycDq4NW ... re=related

Watch at about 14 seconds in, Ripley is at the far right of the screen. Unless she tucked her shirt in first, I highlydoubt it, she is putting on a loose fitting flight type suit.

By coincidence I have the film on right now while reading this thread and was able to watch that particular shot on my widescreen tv.

As Harry said it must be movie magic at work- in the locker scene at the beginning it is most definitely a jumpsuit.

So I guess Dom and I were both right... and both wrong.

Take your pick Yan- both alternatives are screen accurate.

The scenes where she carry Newt around, and have the ammo belt, I believe she's wearing pants. Therefore, I guess I'll keep on trying to get cargopants.

Weird thing is, while they where everywhere last year, we didn't find any that fits Kat when we checked before Polaris.

I must admit we didn't have much time and didn't do many places.

Perhaps I'll expand on what I said just a few posts ago:

After Aliens was released many original costumes were sold at the now legendary Bonhams auction in Hammersmith, London in August 1987.

The auction catalogue has several listings for Ripley's flight-suit (there are nearly always multiples of a costume made for various reasons; stunt work, spare, hero version, FX version etc.). In these listings Ripley's costume is described as both as a one-piece ("a one-piece flying suit") and as a two piece ("grey battle blouse and trousers"). I don't think the auction included every single costume from Aliens but that catalogue proves that there were at least two one-piece Ripley costumes, and one two-piece costume.

It looked like the film makers cheated... they started the film with Ripley in a One piece then switched to a two piece at the end, after all think about the battle in operations and Hicks and Ripley looking for Newt, if it was a two piece in those scenes her top would ride up.. with all that bend and twisting she does in those scenes..

It happens a lot in the film with Props, costumes, etc,

So either one piece or two piece is ok.... its up to you...

Was Ripley's suit custom made for the film or did they use an air force suit like they did in the first Alien?

If you do it well, you could make the one-piece detachable, via that double D-Ring belt she has in pic 2 above.

Great pics thanks for posting!!
I remember when I worked at Alien War there was one of her outfits on display.....so cool!...wish I had a CLOSER look at it!
i also remember Gary Gillies mentioning that when they initially approached Ms Weaver to take part in the opening she was well up for it and even offered to appear as Ripley for the evening!!! I think that's great that she was prepared to do that and actually get involved!

An enviable avatar (and experience) geo71! Very lucky man!

Do you know where pictures of Ripley's costume from the AW London could be found? I've tried hard to find good shots of her shoes but the only photos on the net are really low quality (too bad digital cameras were not existing back then). Surely people took more pictures of this stuff during that event!?!?

Who the hell is Sirgorney Weaver?

Kind of shoddy work for a supposedly big auction.

I too have tried to find decent pics of Ripleys outfit from AW, Harry has a couple on his site, but as you say, digital cameras just weren't around then......I always presumed that the costume was part of Gary Gillies or John Gormans' collection.....they had allsorts of stuff!

I read on another thread that you are more interested in Ripleys gear....me too, dunno why really? Emma Porteus was costume designer on the movie (I think??)......she really came up with a great look for Ripley! I would love to get my hands on a Seiko Speedmaster but it aint ever gonna happen....so rare to find!

I love your avatar  which retro game is it from?
Glad I'm not the only male liking Ripley's gear. It's not as if I would attend a convention dressed in full Ripley gear... but as I said I think what she wears is really cool.
I interviewed the man that actually made the costume for Alien and Aliens but for some reason I forgot to mention the jumpsuit from the second film. Does anyone know if it's a military issue item or if it was custom made for the film?

It's from an old Commodore 64/Sinclair Spectrum game.
I had it on my Spectrum once... It was part of a covertape compilation that they included with Your Sinclair magazine.

Why not?

Firstly, Bishop wears a jumpsuit too...
Secondly, the character of Ripley was originally written as a man anyway. The only real change was casting a woman in the role.
Thirdly - Who says that wearing that kit makes you Ripley? You could just as easily be a random 'civillian advisor' sent in with the troops..... ;)
