The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Al Matthews sure knew how to rock a cool look with his snap back... anyone figure out what style cap is best and what the technique is?

He’s got the badge fixed on the cap but not the upper peak of the badge which sits proud...

As far as the style of cap...
I remember this thread being a breakthrough:

Thanks... yes I recall Noble and I coming to the odd conclusion that the cap may have be branded ROXY... I wasn’t aware that it had actually been confirmed as such... as we were unsure when the brand actually got on the shelves...

This aside I was wondering if anyone had either identified a suitable source of snap backs or identified the style APONE uses...

I also wondered if there were any decent shots of the likes of HUDSON in the peaked cap too... I seem to recall he wears one backwards in the hangar scenes kitting up.

Ideally we are after what I believe to be a relatively soft cap, with a green underside to the visor... and are we saying dark blue and not black?

So from shots in the hangar deck, Drake and Frost wear the green caps... others in snap backs likely to be similar to Apone’s are Spunkmeyer, Hudson and Wierzbowski... anyone got any closeups of their caps?

Actually, Spunkmeyer is wearing a CATERPILLAR cap...

I always thought the "roxy" thing was a long running inside joke.
this pic is obviously fake. seen another one like it too.
Figured the humoour was that Apone would wear a brand made for teenage surfer girls, which did make a flat visor hat popular in the early 2000s, but not like this. when the trend died, it died horribly.

I would say it has to be black. Who said blue?
Overall I don't know how 'soft' it was as much as 'cheap' (so thin material easily manipulated/squished). Just my take on it.

Here is the only pic I know of Hudson wearing it facing forward.

Yeah I’ve no idea how ‘legit’ the Roxy claim is... there was a legit discussion thread a while back - I’m talking at least 3 or so years ago where we were trying to determine if the cap was tagged with something. It doesn’t really matter as I am just after the right kind of snap back design which I can shape... the SULACO patch has clearly been glued in place on the cap APONE wears.

Big - the ‘blue’ came from another thread where someone provided some kind of back story for the supply of ROXY caps from QUICKSILVER... I think they are black as well to be honest...

I wondered if there were possibly better shots of SKI or HUDSON in their caps...

Anything Willie may have?

Thanks for that shot of Hudson, Big...

The image on the right is a simulation but the screen-grab is real; there is a tag of some sort on Apone's cap. This thread might help too.

whoa, youre right. I retract that. Sure looks like a Roxy tag.
This hat looks similar in cut and is roxy branded.
despite some obvious differences.

But what of the fact Roxy wasn't introduced by Quicksilver until 1990?

Dom mentioned in the thread Harry posted. Verified on the quicksilver website.
https://www.quiksilver.com.au/about-us# ... now%20wear.

I guess it was a company originating in England, so they would have had it a bit sooner than the rest of the world, but 5 years is a pretty large gap to accept in this possible explanation.

Yeah that is odd because the label really looks like the Roxy logo. It must be something we haven't seen yet. Wait, where have I heard that before? :D

Does anyone know the shooting order of each scene?

The mess hall scene shows no tag on Apone's hat, but I think I'm seeing the same glue residue from the Sulaco patch as seen in the briefing scene later on where the tag in question is seen.

If we know which order these two scenes were shot, we will know if the tag is a key part in identifying the brand, or if it was stuck on after.

Hudson's hat bill underside is black, but Apone's is definitely green:

Another thing to try is hit eBay, Etsy, etc... and look up "vintage snapback cap/hat lots" and try to see what brands the hats in the lots are from images and descriptions. This will give an idea of available brands back then which we can research. If possible, try to base your searches for lots located in the UK, versus the US.

I probably have call sheets with that info on them Moosh but at the moment they're all in folders in a bookcase that I can't get to (there's a mannequin and a table in the way right now). I'll see what I can do over the weekend and if no one else does, I'll let you know. It's well known that the mess hall scenes were shot last of course but I'm not sure about the others.

This statement is given in the original thread...
" Although the Roxy brand was not registered and made official until 1991 in the U.S., it still existed as an offshoot of the Quiksilver brand as early as 1985 in Australia. "

Ripstick says the following on a thread linked near the top of this chat...

“However, I really should thank my cousin Rachael for getting the scoop on this last year. Since she is still actively on the surfing circuit, she keeps in touch with Roxy Green (Quiksilver/Roxy) in Australia. It was from Roxy that she learned the story behind a little known rush order of hats needed for the Aliens production crew in Buckinghamshire, England. As the original story goes, a girl named Emma in the costume department was putting up a fuss about a box of baseball-type caps that needed to be 'dressed', but were either lost or had never arrived. It was on-set where Al Matthews's daughter Samantha, who at the innocent age of 9, didn't understand what the big deal was. Without giving it a second thought she contacted her friend Roxy, whose dad -- according to her -- made clothes for a living. She asked if her dad could help out with the Aliens 'hat' situation. Well, Roxy's dad turned out to be Alan Green, founder of Quiksilver surf wear. Within 24 hours a box of 12 plain dark blue baseball caps arrived on-set -- just in time to be dressed up with patches and passed out to the crew for use on screen. Although the Roxy brand was not registered and made official until 1991 in the U.S., it still existed as an offshoot of the Quiksilver brand as early as 1985 in Australia. Now doesn't that put everyone's inquiring little minds at ease?”

Bigbisont this is where the reference to caps being blue was. The reality seems to be that very few dark caps make it onto the screen anyway and there seems to be a variety in use... not all identical as Moosh points out... the underside of Hudson’s cap bill is black and Apone’s is green...

Here’s my snap back... it’s got a NOBLE screen printed SULACO patch on it... hasn’t got a green panel on the underside of the bill / visor unfortunately...

Since I seem to be the curmudgeon of this thread, I will do it one more time.

I don't think the underside of Apone's cap is green. I think it was a trick of the light in that still. During the "where do you want it" scene he looks up at an angle several times exchanging looks with Hicks and I am not seeing green, just washed out black.

My theory is a "warm" light (yellow tint, as opposed to "cool" blue) underneath him combined with the blue filter from filming on top of a uniform black surface combined for an illusion of green for a split second.

the vast majority of the time it just looks like illuminated/washed out black.

I agree, I think it's black underneath too. It looks like the same light source that's on Hicks' face.

And I came up with these:

I've emailed them to see if they offer custom hats WITHOUT the Pukka logo on the right-side crown. But I'm very happy with the look of these 8)

For what its worth I worked in production a good chunk of my life and you'd always light black actors with green light.
That could be why the underside is reflecting green.

Hey Moosh... nice thinking... just one question... is their cap design and shape very typical of the fashion type of cap with the very wide and rigid bill?

You can change the visor to "Curved", "Slight Curve" and "Flat". I chose "Flat" the first time, but "Slight Curve" came out better this time:
