Hi,i am making one of these jackets for myself and i had some specific questions about it that, hopefully, someone will be able to help with. Here goes:

Are the name tags on the prison staff jackets pieces of '58 webbing strap?

Is this strapping a standard width?

Are the name tags a set length (like the 5" on the USCM uniform) or are they just made to suit the length of the persons name?

Are they held on with black velcro (i have read conflicting ideas) or just stitched onto the jacket?

and lastly, are the names just written on with black marker pen?

Thanks for your time! :)

regards, Gordon.

I would send user WDI, a PM. He has done extensive research.

The webbing width should be 1 inch.

Names are written with marker.

OD-ish velcro is underneath. You can see Ripley rocking a jacket with just velcro.

You will need to cut off the fury animal trim around the hood.

Here's some picts, not sure who took them:

Many thanks Noble for taking the time to answer and for your advice. I will send WDI a PM with my questions soon. :)

Ah, I've just found this thread after replying to Gordon's PM.

I'll copy in some of my reply here to help others.

Unfortunately, I've never had access to a screen used jacket to be 100% sure but I'll certainly tell what I've done myself.

'58 webbing. is a fair bet; there would have been plenty available at the time.
I've used '58 webbing straps on mine and it works very well.
It's just under 1" wide (mine measures 15/16").

There are three sizes of webbing strap used on '58 webbing. The thin one (probably about 3/4") used on some pouch closures and the pocket on the large pack; the 1" one used for general utility straps; and the thicker one (nearer 2") used for some specialist kit.

I think I probably cut my 1" wide stuff from an old large pack. There are several lengths on there. Or it may have come from the sides straps of the poncho roll.

What we can see from this close up of Clemens' tags is that the text appears to have been applied with marker pen using a stencil. So that's what I did with mine.
It also appears that the velcro (on the jacket at least) may be white.
However we can see in the film that Ripley's jacket doesn't have any name tags on and there are two dark strips of what are presumably just velcro in their place. Could be black could be olive. I used black on mine as I had loads.

I've got no idea about the length of the strips I'm afraid. Though, they definitely appear to be the same size on all the jackets, regardless of the length of the name.

I looked at the photo of the screen used jacket and gauged the length by eye, comparing to my jacket.
From just beyond the pocket popper to just less than the edge of the buttons is about 5".
Though, I found it hard to fit "ASST. SUPT." (Aaron's title) into that space using my stencil, so on mine the name strip is about 5" and the title about 5.5". I would have made them the same but I was 1/2" short of webbing.

I ran a length of close zig-zag stitching at each end of the webbing to prevent it fraying beyond that point. Now that mine is a few years old it's developed the 'fuzzy end' look of the screen used.

Here's mine:

Right, it's been a looooooooong time getting back to this but i had issues getting the '161' patch custom made and a very regrettable purchase of a Chinese knock-off of the Alpha Jacket (major issue with the position of the hand warmer pockets compared to a proper Alpha) but all that nonsense is behind me.
I managed to score a vintage Alpha (from the 80's i think...), got the badges sorted and now the whole thing is away to my seamstress to lock on my positioning. :)
When it all comes back i Just need to remove the fur trims and jobs a good one.....can't wait!

NB: This was my badges in their rough state (never thought to take a picture once they were tidied up: extra connector threads removed etc) never mind, you get the idea

My jacket is back and i'm really happy with how it turned out! I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped me with this project, especially WDI and Noble, whose advice and help was just the boost i needed.
So here is my finished jacket:

Rather than using one of the canon prison staff ranks i opted to 'invent' mine: Work Correctional Unit Tec (WCU-TEC-)

Just my cap and maybe WY inspired trousers and top to do now........

Nice one! :)
Welcome to the club!!

Trousers are on my list to do and have been for some time. I need to knuckle down and find a supplier of suitable sweatshirt fleece and ribbing.
Once I've finalised the pattern on mine I reckon I'll probably offer to custom make for people.

Yes, an N2b in 'Sage' green colour. Just make sure it's an Alpha one and not an imitation (i made that mistake...d'oh!) as the positioning of the pockets is wrong and it will mess up your placements for the name tags.

I've got to find one in white (and within my budget) to start the WY Commando.

Right, managed to grab one of these German belts and a repro WW2 watch cover. The belt just fits in the belt loops of the combats that i have for now, so that was lucky! Now all i need to do is remove whats left of the green paint from the buckle and rough the cover up a little....

One more step closer to the final outfit. :)

Post subject:  Re: FURY 161 Staff Jacket

Ok, i was doing some research on the dog tags and have come up with this. I am convinced that they got the Alien 3 tag:
Image[/img]

From this:
Image[/img]

The above is the U.S. style of tag printed 'between July 1943 and March 1944' and printed as such:
1st line- Name
2nd line- Serial number, tetanus shot, blood type
3rd line- Blank
4th line- Blank
5th line- Religion preference (waaaaay of to the right or left blank if wanted)

So, easy to see that by only having the 1st line printed using your name and the 2nd line printed with an 8 digit number....we have a winner!! Better than that, i am sure that by looking at where the number begin on the 2nd line that the 'Alien 3 notch' can be achieved by printing out the 'Alien 3 tag' to the proper size below:
Image[/img]

And then just cut it out, lay it over your 'actual' bought tag, mark the notch and then file away the excess steel. I still have yet to look at doing the barcode and figuring how to 'weather' the tag but pretty good so far.
Best of all i have found a place, here in the UK: http://www.sofmilitary.co.uk/us-world-w ... ation.aspx
that print this U.S. style of tag on a vintage WW2 machine no less! Needless to say, i contacted them, explained what was needed, and have as such ordered my set of tags. Looking forward to seeing them!

I figured I should add mine as well, I did a inmates "version" of the parka. I added a serial number instead of the job title or a actual name
