The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Thanks for that.

I presume this would have been a found part at the time?

Well from what I can tell,

the far right tubes were plastruct pieces, and we all know the motorcycle part (can't find the kit)

two little bits on the small rectangular plate appear to be from something.

Round bowl piece under the rectangular plate is scratch built, and there's a lot of other scratch sheet material used.

Just a thought. Ive just remember what the vent piece reminded me of. A Britains round baler door:

also the scoop, though not correct has a similiar shape. Probably to big though.

Could this whole part, if not scratch build, be some sort of small motor housing, the slates being a vent?

Just a thought.

As regards to the helmet, if I was to buy the model required and modify it, does one size fit all?

The helmets come in different sizes.

Im unsure what size the original film props were.

Im also unsure if just the inside liner would change in size, or if the shell changes to? Presume just the liner would vary in size?

So whatever size you bought the shell would be the same size, and the modelled side greeblies would be the right scale for any size helmet? Is that correct?

Anyone know?

Shells come in different sizes.

Greeblies are the same.

I'm sure between the two actors, the helmet sizes were different.

Gio might confirm.

As far as I know there are two sizes for the SPH-4: regular and extra large.
Mine is an extra large while the originals are probably size regular. I say this because I noticed some differences to the originals when doing the cutouts.

Cheers,
Stefan

Actually SPH is the abbreviation for Sound Protection Helmet and the 4 represents the 4th version...

Ok, I've had a chance to recover....

To paraphrase my favorite show (Top Gear) this thread is BRILLIANT! :D

Top notch, stunning investigative work and beautiful artistry. And a ton of generosity from Gio for sharing invaluable pics of the originals, and from all the others who worked on this and shared the results.

What a horrible time for me to be MIA :P Might'a gotten a fire lit under my a$$ sooner if I'd seen this thread back then! Seriously inspiring!!! I wanna' go pour resin right now! Hell, I just might after I finish writing this. After all, I've got these beautiful Rapier sight molds waiting to be used :)

As I read the thread, and harvested pics, I wrote down all the parts used. Only to  my a$$ of when I found one already made on pg34  Got so excited about the Polaroid that I immediately posted a bid for one on ePain. Then laughed some more when I found that the parts were being run :)

Anyways, the thread's got me totally psych'd :delta: Hope to get the sight bits going soon.

Jesse

I got mine from Sabre Sales, Portsmouth.

Look at the label inside:

Russ Krook III wrote:

M&B HEADWEAR CO.

It has a stiffener in the front forehead/brow section that gives it a "sharp" top edge
at the hairline. There is no adjustment tab in the back like is found in a standard baseball cap.

Jesse,

I'm willing to give you my sight to complete.

I have most of the parts.

I think what is more important is doing the rapier mount piece. (vacuum + resin bits)

That part's up to Stephen. My molds are for everything else. I couldn't get the base mold done in the (entirely too long) time I had the piece. When I sent the sight back to Stephen, I was originally going to give him the molds too, but he doesn't have pressure casting equipment, and that's DEFINITELY needed for a couple of the parts :P In the strongest resin possible, to boot. I'm using Smooth-On Task 9 for it, since I've yet to find anything stronger that still flows ok. Granted I haven't tried every product they make yet, but I've tried a few ;) So, the Rapier Sight unit's still gonna' be a tag-team with SL & me.

When I had it though, it definitely looked like the base was vac-formed out of several pieces (Kydex maybe?), and then cemented together. Then the rails were glued on. Don't know what Steve's plan is though. I was gonna' make a negative mold and glass it.

Ttaskmaster, thanks for the info m8. But I went on ahead and bought that one I showed above, it was the last one going on ebay, so it was either buy one I thought looked good then, or watch it go ^^
