The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

thanks a lot !
the screen can play animated GIF and avi, it will be converted afterwards in a dedicated format, so the source format doesn't matter. Just stay away of .mov
Make sure your video/gif export is compression free. For the screen pictures, save them as BMP to have them uncompressed too. Module deals with 16 bit color depth, so an AVI is probably better.
Keep in mind that things are written on the screen at certain locations, so you normally need to keep those text area as they are right now. Those are the black areas on the sample pictures previously posted. Ideally, build your graphics using mines as a template. Any how, those can be reworked too, I suppose.

thanks again

Final pictures.

As you'll see, despite the paint is a lighter shade of olive dab compared to the PR (still, matching pretty well), it can be seen as brown bess under certain lighting, which confirm what happens in the movie (IIRC).
I apologize for the screen picture quality, quite hard to depict the exact look of it since it's behind the big lens.

I added a slide show (currently 9 pictures) used as a screen saver. Not much about saving energy but rather the OLED screen itself, to avoid burning a static image (like what happens when you watch cartoon network on a plasma TV).
I also reworked the power supply of the GPS, now I don't need the kill key anymore, it's all controlled by the sliding switch under the hama slide viewer, the recharge port is only used for recharging.

Do we have access to the specific parts and code used? Stuff has gotten a lot more compact in the past few years...

PM sent. Awaiting response. stuff is changing so fast now that some things can be done even more easily. I still have to look at redoing maio's smarten setup in python as the trinket pro is a discontinued item despite the fact I was told by adafruit they would not discontinue it...

you can certainly simplify things nowadays, I used a combination of a smart display (4D systems) with a program running on it linked by a serial port (UART) a modified saber board to provide sensors analyzing and sound fx, which can be done with a teensy for instance (SD card + audio codec shield)

Still the difficulty was having a proper animation of the aliens and ranger finder rotating smoothly. I created frame by frame videos that get addressed based on the readings of the compass. That was quite difficult to achieve, plus blending in with overlay the beams of the aliens location. So technically, one MCU for data, one GPU for the screen, and the screen itself

Do you have the code available to look at?
