Certainly, it sounds interesting.
However, everything is about charity these days.
Ewan and Charley rode around the world, citing a few visits to Unicef places as it all being for charity. This spawned a hundred other people (mostly with the same bike kit) to go and do the same, justifying it by saying it's for charity.
Plus you have a couple hundred large organisations, all begging just £3 a month for some charity or other...
A lot of the same goes on with costume shows.
Once upon a time it was a great thing, but nowadays you get loads of people in costumes, all with collecting tins and people really don't want to know/can't afford it. They come to shows to buy stuff for themselves (which is usually expensive enough) and they don't have that much change between them to be pestered for.
That's one of the reasons we work the way we do - Our attendance at shows is usually rewarded with an official donation by the show organisers (see recent SEGA promotion) directly to our chosen charity. Occasionally, we do very small events or the odd street collection (see thread about Comic Relief in Glasgow).
Typically, we do this for the following reasons:
- To get together with our friends, fellow fans and like-minded individuals.
- To entertain the public and have immense fun.
- To showcase our collections of stuff and develop them further.
- To meet with the stars, say thanks and show our appreciation.
- To further our collections.
The charity aspect is an additional benefit which we are able to incorporate into our work.
I wish I had the foresight to have posted essentially the same thing, but in much fewer words about 45 mins ago ...

I should obviate any misunderstanding about what Woody has Waffled above and say that the UKCM never set out to be charity group, and we do so little fund-raising not because there are too many charity costuming groups around, or because we are against the concept of charity but more because we set it up to have fun and didn't want the bureaucratic hassles of running a fund-raising group.
I really should have sent a considered reply to your email earlier, Ron.
