Post subject:  Suitcase sizes and weights for D-Con?

After chatting with some of you guys at LF&CC I just wanted to open this one up as a discussion about suitcase sizes and weight that we're allowed to take over on the plane to Dragon Con.

Has anyone looked into this yet and has information they can post?

You are allowed 2 suitcases free of charge. Each must be under 62" when Height, Width and Depth are added, and each must be under 22.5kg (50lbs) in weight.

You can read about it on Delta's website HERE but read carefully: Only one suitcase is free on US Domestic flights. Since ours is international, we are allowed 2 checked bags. I have confirmed all this with my friendly Delta Group Sales rep.

Hand luggage is in addition to this, and is normal hand luggage size (I think the web link states exactly what that is). Of course, you can take over MORE luggage, but the excess charges would make your eyeballs bleed.

Harry,

Not sure if you saw my case at LFCC...ooh err!!

Big silver wheelie thing, came from Argos.

It's 65" overall and will cost another $150 if I take it, for the size dimensions alone!

The smaller version that Karyn, Rick and Steve had are fine, about 60" I believe, so I've had to buy one of those.

I don't see the logic that is fine to take two of those, totaling 120" for free, yet 1 case at 65" costs another £75!

Ho - hum.

probably to do with space inside the crates that they load luggage into to put em on the plane.

Yeah, that does seem to be a crazy logic there!

To be honest I haven't started looking at whether I can fit my armour etc. into the case I already have - but it's good to know the ins and outs of the double-case trick etc.

Is yours the big one Rick?

My mistake, I think you have the same one as me.

I didn't realise it was that big...damn!

Definitely no blagging at the check-in then! :(

My current case (nicknamed R2 :D ) is this one:

which works out at about 2 inches too big.

Might have to pop to Argos then.

Blimey, we're gonna have to personalise our cases or we're going to get very confused at the baggage collection area if we've all got identical silver cases!!

Remember, unless the bag looks over sized, or the teller is a prick, being an inch or two over won't make a difference. They rarely measure them (again, unless the bag looks huge).

And the same goes for weight. I've been 5-10 pounds over in weight and they let it slide without charging me, except on British Airways, where they made me buy a $35 duffel bag off them and fill it with the excess weight. Bastards.

I bought my case from Argos today, the one that DATA recommended.

My only disappointment is that the surface is probably not smooth enough to take Mike's stickers - I was going to ask him to make me a label up with 'UKCM' and my name & service number on it.

Harry,

Can you araldite a section of plastic / perspex to the case and mount the stickers on that?

I could do, but I've seen the way the loaders throw cases around - it would probably break or get scraped off.

What you can do harry is this, I will only say this once!!!

Were the hand pulls out the plastic insert that holds this handle is smooth plastic and stickers will be fine on it.

If you look at the suitcase so you can see through the handle onto the plastic insert you could put a sticker there.

BTW get a cable lock for the suitcase as this adds a little more security to case.

I see what you mean Steve, although there's not much room there. It'd be good to have something on the case that looks good and is easily identifiable at a bit of a distance.

I was hoping to do something like this on the body of the case itself.

I took DATA's advice and put a spare name stencil sticker on the handle. Hopefully it'll stay in place for the duration!

Oh, I just finished building & painting my shoulder lamp too - whaddayathink? :)
