Post subject:  My armour build
The day is here. I'm started working on my armour (from Chef).

So first question;

I have tried out the leg sections and I think they are to long. I can't bend my leg without the armour sticking into my leg.

Is this usual? Will I need to trim them down?

IIRC Chef makes his armour big so it can be trimmed down to fit.

Fairly sure I had to trim the rear of my greaves down, here's a pic of how one of them looks now if that helps.

Yup... Matt is 100% correct.

The greaves (leg front and rear) and the chest/back (sides) are made intentionally long to cater for the larger Marines.

They need to be trimmed to suit.

For the front part of the greaves, measure from your ankle bone to the top of your fibula (the outside bone in your lower leg). You should be able to feel it at the side of your knee.
This should give you the approximate length of the front greave.

The rears are normally a couple of inches shorter, to allow for when you crouch down.

You may also need to trim the sides, depending on your calf size.

Hi Guys

A call for help!

I would like some practical help.

To be honest I’m a bit nervous about getting wrong the trimming/cutting.

I was wondering if someone that has already done this could assist me in the measuring and marking out?

Also I have never used a rivet gun. So some help and advise on how to use it would be appreciated.

Have car will travel!

Thanks guys. Doug is kindly helping me out today. I'm popping around for his help in measuring and marking out the armour.

I found a very useful tutorial on uTube on the construction of the helmet and shoulder lamp.

Also it explains how to paint the camouflage patten. To be honest I was a bit lost on that aspect. But after watching the UTube tutorial I'm a little bit more confident.

I will keep you all updated with my progress

An update on my armour build

Well I managed to shaped and cut the armour to fit me. And this week I have been painting the camouflage (trying to get ready for the Drop in Southampton).

To be honest what I have done is not the best paint work I have ever done!

I hope my efforts will not let the side down and if needs must I will sand it down and repaint before the next drop.

Well after some serious consideration I have decided not wear my armour to the Drop. So its going to be "Belt Kit" this weekend.

To be honest I made a bit of a mess to the paint job!

The greens and dark brown are OK, but the tan I made a complete mess.

As the calibre of everyone else's is excellent I feel I would let the side down.

So I will be sanding the armour down and starting again.

A lesson learnt. I was in a rush to get the armour ready for the drop, so I did not take the time over it :(

Rob, thats not the case at all. No one 'lets the side down'. If your not happy, then I can understand. But believe me, no one is going to think that.

As a temporary fix, have you thought about darkening the armour down? You could mist it with black spray paint if your planning to repaint, or use grate polish, charcoal etc. If theres any bits your really not happy with, you could always throw some graffiti on, or use metallic paint for battle damage. I bet the paint is nowhere near as bad as you think!

Wear the armour! This'll be a relatively low key event and we're not critical!

If you're not happy then by all means redo it for later events.

Personally, I'm just lucky that the mere presence of an Alien tends to make people blind to the fact that it looks like a casualty from a glue factory explosion. (and, by that I mean: We're our own biggest critics!)

That's a good thing because you'll always be wanting to 'do it better', but it can also be a drag, because you'll always be thinking "I can do it better".

I want to echo what everyone else is saying, wear the armour!
If you wait until yr 100% happy with it then it'll never get worn, no project is ever finished :)

At the very least, by wearing it out for a while you can get an idea of what you want to change, or if there are any bits that need restrapping/padding/turning the right way roun, and the paintjonay well grow on you after you hauled it around for a few hours.

Whatever you decide, looking forward to seeing you on the readyline tomorrow marine.

Pattern looks ok. The tan colour is deffo overpowering the others - Are those taken with flash as I wonder if it's making the tan look artificially bright? If so do some without flash in natural light if possible, will give a better representation.

This was taken without a flash but this is the base coat. I will spray the armour with a matte black then a clear Lacquer
