i was helping a friend clear out a room the other week. it involved a lot of heavy lifting and occational bad launguage. as a thank you he gave me a little black box. " been in here for donkeys years now, i hear you're into your science fiction stuuf. you might as wel have it"

what i was awarded with was a shock to say the least, the entire cast and crew (including jonsey the cat) of the film aliens in 25mm metal miniature form!

a quick search of the internet reveiled that there are very little of no copies of the game left, and those that are are just a smidge on the expensive side and are on certain bidding sites......

.......might strip and repaint them, just for novelty value......

There's an awesome online version of it, which pretty perfectly replicates the gameplay, and removes the book keeping. Extremely addicting, plus it has added music and sound effects. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face! Give it a shot, I promise you won't regret it!

I had some of the miniatures and the rule book back in the day. The game was a real missed opportunity as it didn't even scratch the surface of what the film hinted at. Comparing it to the Aliens Tech Manual or even Dark Horse's early Aliens comics makes it clear the Leading Edge folks had no real passion for the material.

Whoops, did you mean the boardgame or rpg? I was talking about the boardgame, as far as there being an online version. The rpg...well... Did anyone ever actually play that? Hahaha. I've got a couple copies, one of which is signed by the authors. Never played it cause it seemed like I needed a math degree to figure out the mechanics. I did enjoy reading the sample campaigns though. First one being, COINCIDENTALLY ENOUGH, a Colonial Marine mission to LV-426 to find out what happened to the first mission. Hmmm... Where've I heard that story before..?

lol, at tacblue, it was the boardgame i was on about yes.
as for the r.p.g, there was one guy that i knew who had it, but he was a bit of a douche when it came to running rpgs.
personally i wouldn't mind buying a copy of the r.p.g, but from what i've seen of some of the prices on bidding sites...i'm not sure i could afford it...assuming i could find it or course

Haven't seen any of these in ages! :D the marines look a little... well, 1980's miniatures, but the bugs are still awesome. Still got a few of them, some facehuggers (So drokkin adorable!) and a queen (With fabulous high heels.) in a box somewhere.

If you get em painted up, post some pics, might dig out mine at some point.

The RPG was fun, but like many, wasn't too fleshed out (Leading Edge went down before they could even think of any supplements). I did have all the miniatures back in the day, save for the APC (A beast). Shockingly, Leading Edge were also bringing out a 25mm Dropship!

One of my dreams is to finally do a new RPG, which is a hell of a lot of work! Then of course there's the minor issue of affording to pay licencing to Fox, and printing!

A new RPG will have the bonus of allowing new LICENCED miniatures, rather than the past two decades of "ah, close enough".

Well, that is cool - I'd only seen pictures of the box and the miniature, so wasn't sure if they went down before it came out, I know some people described it as a myth!

I've heard veiled whispers of some being out there, shrouded in the mists of obscurity and low production numbers. I've never seen one built though, which is a shame, if understandable, cos it looked like a nice kit!

It could be they went into release immediately before it all fell apart, or they might've simply never hit shelves. In the miniatures industry, even before anything reaches sales/production runs a fair few examples get out there for sampling, for instance there's dozens of citadel minis that never actually made it to release for whatever reason, never were on shelves or even given at events, and yet still have sufficient numbers floating around for most of them to pop up a few times a year.

If it gets past casting, they do a bunch, at that scale it makes no sense to just produce one, or even a handful, to show off. they do a small run, then step it up when it gets to the sales phase. Some of those original run kits sometimes stumble their way onto shop shelves (because, they might as well.), others just sit in boxes for decades or are given to people in the company.

I had the leading edge tabletop game, the marines, the queen, aliens and powerloader, as well as the rpg....you know how the wife gets the house in the divorce......ah well:/ I found some stuff on ebay, hoping to recoup some losses, but yeah, way too pricey. I did play the rpg as well, it was ok. I mostly used it alongside the aliens technical manual (yeah she got that too, binned the lot as far as I'm aware) as source material.

If there was a good price on the rpg......;)

One of the best aspects of the Leading Egde system was that they acknowledged that the aliens were not the only, or indeed main, threat the USCM dealt with (something a lot of gamers used to the AVP games didn't seem to accept when A:CM came along).

The RPG itself turns up on ebay once in a while and not too inflated prices, the boardgames and miniatures though, people ask for stupid money - last time I saw the boardgame it was going for £60!

Wow....been watching a couple of boxed versions of the game go for £80 and £102 on ebay...

If you don't want to pay that much you can sign up to boardgamegeek.com and download the rules and all the other bits you need to print and play the game.

Fancy having a bash at this game myself denizenminiatures do some cool Mid-Tech miniatures that are a spitting image for colonial marines.

You've also got Hasslefree Miniatures that do some not-colonial marines, and not-pulse rifles. Decent smartgunner on hasslefree in particular :D Plus a ripley, and two newts.

Post subject:  Re: leading edge games

here are the denizen figures converted with hasslefree pulseys and the hasslefree figures painted as USCM, i think they are way better than the leading edge figures, and look every inch colonial marines!!
the hasslefree ones are in a slightly different armour but they can be EU, they also do a lovely hazmat team which look good in USCM camo.
