The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

It can't be both ways. Without the patches it's just Mess Dress, which people won't want to wear because of the risk of being mistaken as real military.

It's not like formal uniform can't be covered in bits of flare.

I now need to go through all my posts and change the word 'uniform' to 'costume'.

Yes, it's a costume...but it's a costume of a uniform. It's just about deciding a balance between realism and fiction.
We've got a bit to play with, because the UKCM are still fairly 'Americanised' with the patches and regiment nicknames.

I just personally can't imagine any form of mess dress with big mission patches on.
Some sort of identifiers, yes. But probably something in keeping with the formality of evening wear.

That was the point of the dress blues idea being based on Royal Marines in the 1st place to make the UKCM more British than American

If we do get some sort of red jacketed uniform at dragoncon can some one run ahead of us screaming "THE BRITISH ARE COMING! THE BRITISH ARE COMING!!"

Here is my proposal. Drawn up some time back and has since been languishing on my HD.

All patches are subdued. As is the rank. Note the mandarin collar and lack of any tie. No stripe on the representation of the trousers either.
Simple, sharp. And above all it will not be mistaken by any serving Squaddie or Rupert as a current uniform and will hopefully then not cause any offence.
I just updated the image with my current ribbons and unit patch.

I like it but it does look a tad 'wait staff'.

I don't think it should have unit patch on it or even the Union Flag. Rank should be conspicuous. Gold stripes would look sharp.

Gold is what the British Army use in their mess dress for rank. Again, my subdued attempt was simply another way to differentiate costume from uniform.

But in the interests of fairness, here is my proposal with what Vicky suggests:

I worked hard to get my rank! I want to show it if. ;). I was actually thinking gold on a black background so they stand out even more.

For the sake of consistency, I think the rank should point up. We're already Marines wearing US Army ranks. ;) The rank patch on my flight suit and Service C's point up. I'd like my dress uniform to follow suit.

As much as I'd like the Lion on there I can't think where it would go, unless we only have rank on one sleeve and the lion on the other?

Well, I was going for UK chevrons as it is a UKCM Costume for the UK contingent. Made sense to use British Army chevrons!

The danger with the lion patch is that we start to loose the formality.
Perhaps a pair of 'mudguards' as identifiers, worn at the head of the sleeve, similar to the RAF Regt?

And/Or the lion device, separated from the patch, worn on the lapels?

I had thought about the mudguards/rocker but then we're getting into custom patches and this was supposed to be an easy costume to put together, just grabbing things off the shelf so to speak.

I'm really digging the direction this is going though. :D

Found a custom rocker patch on eBay that's only £4.25. They'd probably drop the price if we're doing a bulk order.

Don't think I'm breaking any rules by posting the link as it's not an auction.

I prefer the rank pointing upwards - We don't wanna go TOO far from the film, after all. We're still part of the same overall Corps, only certain aspects would differ IMHO.

No waist coat, no buttons, wrong shirt etc. I'll leave it to the group but it might be worth taking it a step further by adding the wrong style strips and / or a UKCM badge of some sort.

Sandy -- great minds :D

Don't forget the USCM Camo Cummerbund Kev!

I thought pretty much everyone in the UKCM did.
Being as it's movie-correct. Sure someone had 'em "upside down" once, and had it pointed out to them at the NSC.

The more we can distance ourselves from the real armed forces whilst still keeping the right "feel", the better.
