The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Went down to HQ this weekend and had a discussion about some of the potential design aspects.

What Kev wore was Mess Dress but it was damn sexy so I'll throw my vote in for it as well.

Gee thanks guys

I'll look up some links and pictures

But as Vic's said it was based on the UK army mess dress. There are a number of different regimental difference to lookout for, different collars, colours etc. Mine was just the cheapest generic red, no buttons, black collar, pointed cuffs, no epaulets. There are number of different regiments that have used it.

Might be worth Rich looking in Saber to see if they have any

Whilst the Royal Marines wear the same red 'infantry' style Mess jacket as infantry regiments of the British Army, I've always liked the 'mounted' style jackets.

The Household Cavalry wear red, as do the Adjutant General's Corps:

Black (technically dark blue) is the alternative. For example here, as per the Royal Logistics Corps:

Or here with the light blue for Officers of the Army Air Corps:

The Air Corps one looks like something from Star Trek. :)

Hmm.... when I proposed this mess dress idea, many moons ago and during DragonCon I was either laughed off or told it'd be too similar to reality, ruffle feathers, etc.

Not that I'm disapproving here!

To be honest, it's not something I'd go in for personally.
Maintaining one set of mess dress is enough.

Hopefully it's not so close as to cause offence (any of the squaddies i ever served with would just have taken the piss)

No waist coat, no buttons, wrong shirt etc. I'll leave it to the group but it might be worth taking it a step further by adding the wrong style strips and / or a UKCM badge of some sort.

Sandy -- great minds :D

I've not seen the pics yet. Did you wear a bow tie or long tie?
The latter would further differentiate this from the real deal?

Perhaps with some more patches, and keeping the blood stripes for higher ranks, it would look different enough that there shouldn't be any problems.

Though I do have to ask.... would us female types be expected to wear evening dresses under our jackets?

Personally, Mess Dress is so recognisable that to wear it with a normal tie, loads of badges etc would look more odd to my eye than just a few CM insignia.
I can imagine that the first thing to pop into my head would be "What on earth is going on with that weird mess dress?".
Now, obviously that's a military perspective. I don't know how the average civie would see it.

I know it would look weird. But so long as it's not mistaken as the mess dress of a current or past unit, we should be ok. Current Squaddies and Ruperts might take the piss, but shouldn't take offence to someone wearing a current uniform.

Is it? I'd consider myself fairly knowledgable of current UK uniforms but it took me a few minutes to figure out what Kev was wearing. I don't think it's something immediately identifiable as a Armed Service uniform.

The patch thing would look strange to start with because as Brits we're used to very subtle identifiers for regiment/rank, but anything that changes the look of the uniform is a good thing IMHO.

I did suggest in a PM to Kev that the patches be in subdued colours to compliment the red coat.
Much like on some uniforms, the ranks are subdued.

I guess it would depend on whether you are trying to create an UKCM Mess Dress, or just using a mess jacket as part of a parade uniform?

Mess Dress is formal wear, the equivalent of black tie. So it would contain the minimum of badging. Rank and qualification badges are fancy - gold bullion thread and braid. Qual badges are miniature sized and it would normally be worn with miniature medals.

The general idea was to create something smarter than the Service C's to be worn at formal occasions, such as the DragonCon AL meal. In that respect what we're talking about here would be considered Mess Dress.

The idea of a UKCM Dress Blue uniform has been thoroughly quashed. But people seem to love the Mess Dress, so it makes sense that the Mess Dress be modified enough to stop it being confused as a real uniform. The way I see it we either cover the uniform in patches, create a uniform from scratch that has nothing to do with any armed force past or present, or bin the idea completely.

I find the idea of Mess Dress covered in patches a little bit out of keeping with the formality of the uniform.
Even the American's have few badges on their mess dress...and they LOVE to put patches everywhere :D
